Women’s Worlds Day 4 Recap: Marie-Philip Poulin pots two as Canada blows past Japan

Team Canada continued its relentless charge forward at the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship with a 9–0 victory over Team Japan in group stage play on Sunday.

The Canadians outshot their opponents 69–5 in the game, including a 24–0 blanking in the first period. Emerance Maschmeyer posted a five-save shutout, while eight different skaters found the back of the net.

While she didn’t score the game-winning goal, Team Canada captain Marie-Philip Poulin was the lone player to tally twice in the contest. The three-time Olympic gold medallist led the way with six shots on goal and also assisted on Sarah Fillier’s marker in the third period.

Poulin, 31, scored Canada’s second and fifth goals of the game. The 5’6″ forward now has three goals and five points in three games at the 2022 Worlds; her first goal on Sunday was the 90th of her international career.

Victoria Bach netted the game-winning goal (in slick fashion, no less) and also picked up two assists for Team Canada; Emma Maltais, Blayre Turnbull, Ella Shelton, Jamie Lee Rattray, Sarah Potomak, and Fillier also scored for the victors.

Team Canada currently sits atop Group A with a perfect 3–0–0–0 record through three games. Conversely, Team Japan has scored just one goal in the entire tournament thus far and has lost all three of its contests in regulation.

  • Here’s a look at Bach’s first assist of Sunday’s game, a perfect back-door setup for a Blayre Turnbull tap-in goal. Team Canada will need both players firing at all cylinders against Team USA on Tuesday. The Americans have already scored 16 goals in two games and have only allowed one; Team Canada has scored 17 and allowed two through three games. When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object …
  • Team Hungary came oh-so-close to toppling Team Denmark on Sunday. The Hungarians outshot their opponents 45–19 but couldn’t solve goaltender Lisa Jensen, who stopped absolutely everything thrown at her in the game. Julie Ostergaard broke the deadlock early in the third period, and that was all it took as the Danes came away with a 1–0 win — likely ending Team Hungary’s bid for a spot in the knockout round, barring a surprise win over Team Sweden on Monday.

Day 4 Results
