Women’s Worlds Day 6 Recap: Team USA scores five unanswered to defeat Canada

After falling behind 2–0 in the first period, Team USA scored five unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes to defeat Team Canada on Day 6 of the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
Megan Keller, Kelly Pannek, Lacey Eden, Kendall Coyne Schofield, and Hilary Knight tallied in the 5–2 victory for the Americans. Team USA also outshot Team Canada 33–28.
With her empty-net goal, Knight moved within one point of Hayley Wickenheiser for the all-time Women’s Worlds points record. Wickenheiser scored 86 points in 61 games with Team Canada at 13 World Championships; Knight, now on her 12th Worlds appearance, is up to 85 points in 53 games.

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) August 30, 2022After Sarah Fillier and Ella Shelton scored for Team Canada in the opening frame, American goaltender Nicole Hensley locked it down the rest of the way. The 28-year-old from Littleton, Colorado finished the game with 26 saves on 28 shots faced, good for an excellent .929 save percentage.
In her fourth international tournament as Team USA captain, Coyne Schofield finally scored her first goal (to go along with a tournament-leading seven assists) at a critical time.
The 30-year-old forward and NHL All-Star skills competition alumnus gave the Americans a 4–2 lead in the dying minutes of the third period on Tuesday, with Savannah Harmon picking up the lone assist.

With the win, Team USA finished the group stage as the lone undefeated team in Group A and clinched a matchup with Team Hungary in the tournament quarterfinals.
Team Canada placed second in Group A with a 3–1–0–0 record and will take on Team Sweden in the quarters. Prior to Tuesday’s action, the Canadians hadn’t lost a game at a major international tournament since they fell by a 4–2 score against the Finns in the semifinals of the 2019 Worlds.

- Team Hungary is still alive!!! The Hungarians needed Germany to defeat Denmark in regulation time on Tuesday to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout round, but things didn’t look promising as the Danes held a 2–1 lead with less than five minutes left in the third period. (The Germans also needed to win in regulation to avoid relegation). But Laura Kluge scored to make it 2–2 with 4:11 to play, and then — with German goaltender Sandra Arbstreiter on the bench — Tanja Eisenschmid did the unthinkable, scoring from distance to give Team Germany the lead with ONE TENTH OF A SECOND remaining. Check out the elation from the German broadcasters in this video clip of the goal:
DU DELIRE, INCROYABLE !
Il fallait un but gagnant dans les 60mn pour l'Allemagne 🇩🇪 afin qu'elle se maintienne, Tanja Eisenschmid l'a marqué à 59'59" !
Les Allemandes restent en élite mondiale et envoient le Danemark en D1A. Incroyable scénario.

- The Germans somehow pulled out the 3–2 regulation win and, in doing so, clinched their spot at the 2023 Worlds, relegated Team Denmark, and punched Team Hungary’s ticket to the quarterfinals, all in one fell swoop. The Hungarians will make their first-ever Women’s Worlds quarterfinal appearance on Thursday when they take on Team USA. My goodness.
- Team Sweden entered Tuesday’s game against Team Czechia as one of the unlikeliest success stories of this year’s tournament, having gone undefeated through three games despite being relegated at the 2019 Worlds. But the Czechs ultimately defeated the Swedes 3–0 to remain atop Group B and clinch a quarterfinal matchup against Team Finland. Team Sweden actually outshot the Czechs 27–24 on Tuesday but couldn’t get anything past reigning top Swedish League goaltender and Olympic All-Star Klara Peslarova.

- Susanna Tapani picked up a pair of points, including the game-winning goal, in Team Finland’s 4–0 win over Team Switzerland on Tuesday. The Finns outshot their opponents 44–6, with goaltender Jenna Silvinen posting a relatively straightforward shutout. Elisa Holopainen, Krista Parkkonen, and Ronja Savolainen also scored in the commanding victory for Team Finland.
