Penguins captain Sidney Crosby out for Game 6 vs. New York Rangers

The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without captain Sidney Crosby as they attempt to close out the New York Rangers in Game 6 on Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.

Sources tell Daily Faceoff that Crosby has experienced concussion-like symptoms following a hit from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba in the second period of Game 5 that caused him to leave the game.

Crosby, 34, has missed 114 games in his NHL career with at least three documented concussions.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan has not disclosed the nature of Crosby’s injury, saying only that it is of the “upper-body” variety, but confirmed that Crosby will miss Game 6.

“Sid is in a good place,” Sullivan told reporters following Friday’s morning skate.

The two-time Conn Smythe Trophy winner did not participate in the skate, but skated prior to practice with skills coach Ty Hennes, while Sullivan reshuffled the Pens’ lineup around him.

Fellow Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin moved up to center the top line with Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust. Evan Rodrigues slid up to the No. 2 center spot, while Jeff Carter and Teddy Blueger centered the third and fourth lines. Veteran Brian Boyle is also available to move to the middle if need be.

Crosby’s absence has the ability to loom large over this best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup. He was every bit the dominant force through the first four games as he was during his Conn Smythe campaigns, racking up nine points as the Penguins cruised to a 3-1 series lead.

They were leading, 2-0, when Crosby left the game with 6:50 to play in the second period. The Rangers scored three times in the ensuing three minutes, wreaking havoc on goaltender Louis Domingue for the first time all series. New York hung on to force Game 6 with a resounding 5-3 win and Crosby’s injury has seemingly given them new life.

Crosby is not the only Penguins player slated to miss Game 6 with a suspected concussion. Forward Rickard Rakell has also not played since Game 1 when he was rocked by Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren.

Rakell has made progress, according to sources, but is not quite ready yet to return to the lineup. Defenseman Brian Dumoulin will also be out on Friday for the banged up Penguins.

Injured All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry, out since April 14 with a fractured bone in his foot, participated in Pittsburgh’s morning skate as he inches closer to a return. He will not be in the lineup on Friday; Alex D’Orio will backup Domingue for the fifth consecutive game since Casey DeSmith left Game 1 with a torn groin.

Jarry is a possibility to play in a potential Game 7, if needed, on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
