Varlamov has missed the entire 2025-26 campaign due to a knee injury but had some encouraging news on Tuesday as the 37-year-old veteran was loaned to Bridgeport (AHL) on an LTIR conditioning assignment. The Russian netminder appeared in 10 games as Ilya Sorokin's backup in 2024-25, with a 3-4-3 record, 2.89 GAA and .889 SV%.

Varlamov has not played in the 2025-26 season due to a knee injury and Islanders' GM Mathieu Darche announced on Friday that he does not expect Varlamov back this season. The 37-year-old veteran goalie has one year remaining on his contract with the Islanders.

Coming off offseason surgery, it's unclear when Varlamov will return to action, but he will start the 2025-26 campaign sidelined on the Injured Reserve. The 37-year-old netminder was limited to only 10 games last season (3-4-3), posting a 2.89 GAA and .889 SV%, due to various injuries.

Varlamov had been on the ice taking shots recently but suffered a setback and is out indefinitely. Varlamov has been out since November 29th and does not have a timeline for his return.

Marcus Hodberg has served as the backup to Ilya Sorokin the last several games, a trend that will continue until the new year as Varlamov will not be eligible to return until, at earliest, January 5th against the Boston Bruins. The 36-year-old Varlamov owns a 3-4-3 record and an .889 SV% in ten games this season.

The Islanders have recalled goalie Marcus Hodberg from Bridgeport (AHL) on an emergency basis with Varlamov sidelined due to a lower-body injury. If Varlamov misses any time, expect Ilya Sorokin to see the entire workload between the pipes for the Islanders.

The Islanders enter the action on Monday as -147 home favorites against a Red Wings club they have only scored one goal against in two meetings this season (0-2-0).
