The Rangers have signed Ben Harpur to a two-year contract extension worth $1.55 million ($775K AAV).

Harpur has served as the No.7 defenseman for the Rangers this season, suiting up in 18 games this season, scoring one goal with two assists (three points). He's also spent time in the AHL this year, tallying five points (3G / 2A) in 17 games.

The Maple Leafs have acquired Ben Harpur, Cody Ceci, Aaron Luchuk and a 2020 third-round pick from the Senators for Nikita Zaitsev, Connor Brown and Michael Carcone.

Harpur is a huge defenseman (6-foot-6, 222 lbs) who plays a physical brand of hockey. Harpur averaged 1.7 hits and 1.4 blocked shots per game in 2018-19 but contributes very little offensively—1G, 4A in 51 games. Harpur could potentially be a third-pairing defenseman for Toronto in 2020 but they have a number of young defensemen in the pipelines who will be looking to push Harpur out.

Harpur (back) is expected to return to the Senators lineup on Friday.

Harpur has been out with a back injury since October 20th, but is expected to play Saturday in Dallas. Harpur was a full-participant in Thursday’s practice and is expected to either replace Christan Jaros or sever as the seventh defenseman on Friday.

The Senators have recalled Ben Harpur from Belleville (AHL).

Harpur has split his time between the NHL and AHL this season, recording just one assist in 14 NHL games and four points (2G / 2A) in eight AHL games. He has likely been brought back up to serve as the Senators No.7 defenseman.
