Niklas Kronwall News

Niklas Kronwall has announced his retirement from the NHL.

Kronwall wraps up his career with 432 points (83G / 349A) and 1081 hits in 953 career games with the Red Wings. Kronwall was known for his decimating hits but also had three seasons with 40-plus points, including a 51-point campaign in 2009. The 38-year-old was a Stanley Cup Champion in 2008.

Kronwall (groin) is on the ice for warmups; will make his season debut on Thursday.

Kronwall missed the first three games of the season with a groin injury that he suffered during the offseason. Kronwall has had a really tough time with injuries during recent years, but he still plays big minutes at 5-on-5 and on the power-play, so he could have some sneaky fantasy value in deep, deep leagues while he is healthy.

Kronwall (groin) will not play in the Red Wings season opener.

Despite Kronwall saying that he felt like he would play tonight, Jeff Blashill told reporters otherwise. The veteran defenseman will sit out vs. the Wild and Xavier Ouellet will take his spot on the blueline. The injury also means that Trevor Daley is expected to see power-play time.

Kronwall (groin) is optimistic that he will play in the Red Wings’ season opener.

Kronwall was in and out of practice during training with a groin injury, but was back on the ice on Wednesday and said he thinks he will play on Thursday. Kronwall was paired with Mike Green in Wednesday’s session, but he is too injury prone at this point in his career to have any fantasy value.

Kronwall (lower-body) will likely return to the lineup on Saturday.

Kronwall missed the last three games with a lower-body injury, but is expected to return tomorrow in Columbus. Kronwall will replace Jonathan Ericsson, who suffered a fractured wrist last night. The veteran defenseman has just five assists in 30 games this season.

Kronwall (knee) will make his season debut on Friday.

Kronwall has missed the first 11 games of the season with a debilitating knee injury, but will make his debut tonight vs. the Jets. Kronwall used to be a solid fantasy defenseman, but his injury concerns and advancing age limit his potential in 2016-17. He had 26 points (3G / 23A) in 64 games last year and will be featured on the Red Wings’ top power-play unit tonight.

The Red Wings have placed Niklas Kronwall (knee) on injured reserve.

Kronwall was not expected to be ready for the season opener, so his movement to IR was inevitable in order for them to keep a young defenseman up with the big club. The lingering knee issue could be a big problem for Kronwall in the long-run and as for the short-term, he remains without a timetable to return.

Kronwall (knee) skated with the team for the first time on Tuesday.

Kronwall had been limited to skating on his own throughout the start of training camp, but joined the Red Wings for their morning skate on Tuesday. Kronwall was forced to drop out of the World Cup of Hockey because of the knee injury and his availability for the Red Wings’ season opener remains up in the air. If he can’t go in Game No.1, look for Xavier Ouellet or Ryan Sproul to fill-in for him.
