Kronwall wraps up his career with 432 points (83G / 349A) and 1081 hits in 953 career games with the Red Wings. Kronwall was known for his decimating hits but also had three seasons with 40-plus points, including a 51-point campaign in 2009. The 38-year-old was a Stanley Cup Champion in 2008.
Kronwall missed the first three games of the season but will draw in for Dennis Cholowski (upper-body) tomorrow vs. the Maple Leafs. Kronwall will likely be limited to third pair minutes with some power-play time in his first game back.
Kronwall did not travel to California, so he will mis this third straight game to start the season. The Red Wings will continue to play three rookies on their blueline with Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Mike Green and Trevor Daley all out.
Kronwall was often given one game of a back-to-back off last year, so it is not surprising to see him returning from injury in just one of the Red Wings’ games in California. He will likely replace one of the three rookies that played on Thursday.

Kronwall has had a really tough time with injuries during recent years, but he still plays big minutes at 5-on-5 and on the power-play, so he could have some sneaky fantasy value in deep, deep leagues while he is healthy.

Kronwall used to be a solid fantasy defenseman, but his injury concerns and advancing age limit his potential in 2016-17. He had 26 points (3G / 23A) in 64 games last year and will be featured on the Red Wings’ top power-play unit tonight.
Kronwall was not expected to be ready for the season opener, so his movement to IR was inevitable in order for them to keep a young defenseman up with the big club. The lingering knee issue could be a big problem for Kronwall in the long-run and as for the short-term, he remains without a timetable to return.
Kronwall had been limited to skating on his own throughout the start of training camp, but joined the Red Wings for their morning skate on Tuesday. Kronwall was forced to drop out of the World Cup of Hockey because of the knee injury and his availability for the Red Wings’ season opener remains up in the air. If he can’t go in Game No.1, look for Xavier Ouellet or Ryan Sproul to fill-in for him.
