The Jets and Dustin Byfuglien have mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

Byuglien did not receive any money from the Jets as part of agreeing to resolve his grievance and terminate his contract. He walked away from $14 million due to him over this season and next according to TSN's Frank Seravalli. The earliest Byfuglien can join an NHL team is the 2020-21 season. Byfuglien finishes his Jets career with 363 points (102G / 261A) in 528 regular season games.

Byfuglien underwent ankle surgery and is expected to miss at least four months.

There hasn't been a lot of news surrounding Byfuglien's potential return but this effectively ends his 2019-20 season. Byfuglien's career remains in question and if you were holding onto him in the hope of a mid-season return, you can drop him now.

Byfuglien is taking a personal leave of absence to “ponder his NHL future.”

Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that Byfuglien is using the time to ponder his future. McKenzie did not explicitly say that Byfuglien is retiring or gaming back to play, just that he’s contemplating his options and there’s “no timetable” for a decision.

Byfuglien has no timetable to return to the Jets lineup and will go back to Winnipeg to receive treatment on his ankle. Nathan Beaulieu and Sami Niku will continue to play fairly large roles on the Jets blueline while Byfuglien and Josh Morrissey are out.

Byfuglien was on the ice for the Jets morning skate but will not play Saturday vs. the Ducks. His availability this morning suggests that Byfuglien will play Tuesday after missing 15 games with an ankle issue.

Coming out of the All-Star break, Byfuglien remained in Winnipeg to receive treatment while the team headed east. Byfuglien will not play Monday in Philadelphia or Tuesday and Boston but head coach Paul Maurice was also non-committal about him playing when the team returns home to face the Blue Jackets on Thursday.

Byfuglien has missed the last three games but is expected to be back in the lineup on Friday vs. the Blues. Byfuglien will replace Cam Schilling on the blue line and likely take his spot back on the top PP unit. Byfuglien has 17 points (2G / 15A) in 21 games this season.

Byfuglien was stunned in a heavy collision with Jamie Oleksiak on Tuesday, eventually returned to the lineup. Byfuglien was eventually diagnosed with a concussion and missed Thursday’s game and will miss at least a few more contests after being placed on injured reserve. Sami Niku could remain in the Jets lineup while Byfuglien is out.

Byfuglien was stunned by a hit on Thursday but eventually returned to the game. This morning he remained off the ice and is questionable for Thursday’s game because of concussion-like symptoms. Cam Schilling will play if Byfuglien is unavailable.

Byfuglien has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury, but will be back in tonight vs. the Canucks. Byfuglien will replace Dmitry Kulikov on the blueline and comes in with just one assist and seven shots on goal in four games this season.

Byfuglien was back on the ice for Monday’s practice but is not ready to re-join the lineup tonight. With Byfuglien out, Dmitry Kulikov will remain in the lineup and Josh Morrissey figures to run the top power-play unit like he did on Sunday.

Byfuglien has missed the last 10 games with a lower-body injury but will return tonight in Colorado. Byfuglien is shockingly still searching for his first goal of the season, but has picked up 15 assists, a plus-4 rating and 49 PIMS as he contributes in other areas. He will replace Tucker Poolman in the lineup.

Paul Maurice said that Byfuglien is “progressing well” and is on track to be back in early-January. Byfuglien missed the Jets morning skate but was on the ice prior to the skate so he should join his teammates in the coming days/weeks.
