Shawn Matthias News

The Jets have activated Shawn Matthias (upper-body) from IR.

Matthias has been out since January 12th and just because he was activated this afternoon, the 30-year-old is not expected to draw into the Jets lineup on Tuesday. Matthias didn’t bring a lot of offence earlier in the season, picking up just three points (1G / 2A) in 25 games before getting hurt.

Matthias (lower-body) will return to the Jets lineup on Thursday.

Matthias has missed the last 25 games with a lower-body injury that he suffered at the start of November. In his first 10 games in a Jets’ uniform Matthias collected two goals with one assist on 12 shots. He will replace Andrew Copp in tonight’s lineup.

The Jets have placed Shawn Matthias (lower-body) on injured reserve.

Matthias left Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury and did not return. Matthias’ injury is serious enough that he will miss at least one week, so the Jets have moved him to IR. With a roster spot open, the Jets have recalled Andrew Copp from Manitoba (AHL).

The Jets have signed Shawn Matthias to a two-year contract worth $4.25 million ($2.125M AAV).

Matthias, 28, split his time between the Maple Leafs and the Avalanche last year. He had 17 points (6G / 11A) in 51 games with Toronto before being traded to Colorado, where he added an additional 11 points (6G / 5A) in 20 games. The Jets are relatively thin upfront, so Matthias could land himself a top-6 gig.

The Avalanche have acquired Shawn Matthias from Toronto for Colin Smith and a fourth-round draft pick.

Matthias, 28, signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs at the start of the season but will now provide third-line depth for the Avalanche, who are making a playoff push in the Western Conference. Matthias has 17 points (6G / 11A) in 51 games with the Maple Leafs this season, but had a career-high 18 goals with the Canucks last season.

Matthias will take James van Riemsdyk's spot on the Maple Leafs' top line.

van Riemsdyk will miss the next 6-8 weeks, so Matthias will get the first crack on the Maple Leafs’ top line with Tyler Bozak and P.A Parenteau. Matthias has just 12 points (3G / 9A) in 39 games this season.

Matthias (head) returned to practice on Friday.

Matthias has missed the last two games with a head injury. It appeared as if he might return on Tuesday when he took the ice for warmups, but he was a late scratch. Being back at practice today is sign he could return to the lineup on Saturday.
