The Maple Leafs have signed Ron Hainsey to a two-year deal worth $6.0M ($3.0M AAV).
Hainsey posted strong offensive numbers early in his career, but has not topped 20 points in the last seven seasons. Hainsey is a mobile defenseman who is expected to play the right side in Toronto, but likely won’t be called upon to play heavy minutes.

It is a terrible time to be a Penguins’ defenseman because they just can’t stay healthy. Hanse left Wednesday’s game in Philadelphia and did not return and is expected to miss at least a few weeks with an upper-body injury.

Trade
The Penguins have acquired Ron Hainsey from the Hurricanes in exchange for a 2017 2nd round pick and Danny Kristo.
Hainsey is a mobile, veteran defenseman, who has scored four goals with 10 assists (14 points) in 56 games this season. He could make his Penguins debut in the outdoor game on Saturday. The injuries to Trevor Daley, Olli Maatta and Kris Letang necessitated this move for the Penguins.

Hainsey will be scratched on Tuesday due to an illness, so the Hurricanes have recalled Trevor Carrick from Charlotte and he will make his NHL debut tonight. Hainsey is listed as day-to-day.

Hainsey missed Hurricanes practice on Friday and is questionable for tomorrow’s game in Minnesota. The Hurricanes will recall a defenseman and then make a decision on Hainsey tomorrow.

Signing
The Canes, looking to fill the void left by injured defenseman Joni Pitkanen, signed free-agent defenseman Ron Hainsey on Thursday. General manager Jim Rutherford said Hainsey would receive a one-year, $2 million contract.
He played 47 games for the Jets last season, with no goals and 13 assists. He led Winnipeg in blocked shots (123).
