Akira Schmid News

Jacob Markstrom was excellent in Florida's season opener, saving all 15 shots he faced in a 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Still, the team will rotate netminders early, turning to Schmid on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. The 26-year-old Schmid has had successful stints at the NHL level and is coming off a career-high 34 games played (16-10-6) last season with the Vegas Golden Knights, posting a 2.59 GAA and .893 SV%. The Panthers enter Thursday as -142 road favourites.

The 26-year-old Schmid has had successful stints at the NHL level and is coming off a career-high 34 games played (16-10-6) last season with the Vegas Golden Knights, posting a 2.59 GAA and .893 SV%. The Panthers enter Thursday as -142 road favourites.

The Panthers entered the postseason with neither of their goaltenders from the previous season under contract, looking to revamp the position, and Schmid was their first acquisition. The 26-year-old Schmid spent most of the 2025-26 season with the Vegas Golden Knights, earning a career-high 34 starts due to numerous injuries above him on the team's goaltending depth chart. That said, he was serviceable when called upon, posting a 2.59 GAA and .893 SV% with a 16-10-6 record.

The Golden Knights continue their goalie rotation, hoping one of their goalies can take the reins of the crease, turning to Schmid on Friday against the Minnesota Wild. The 25-year-old Schmid allowed three goals on 28 shots (.893 SV%) in his most recent outing, a 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. He has a 3.02 GAA and .886 SV% in his last six games (1-4-1). The Golden Knights enter Friday's contest as slight -106 home favourites against a Wild team coming off an impressive 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Adin Hill has been among the league's least reliable goaltenders in recent weeks, and the Golden Knights have surprisingly had to rely on Schmid more than expected as a result. The 25-year-old Schmid has been far from stellar, but has still been far and away better than Hill. Schmid has a 2.60 GAA and .898 SV% in his last nine games (5-3-1). The Golden Knights enter Tuesday's contest as +131 road underdogs against a rolling Buffalo Sabres team that has outscored their opposition 11-5 during a three-game winning streak.

Schmid has been the most consistent netminder for the Golden Knights this season, and he will return to the crease on Friday against the Washington Capitals. Heading into the Olympic break, the 25-year-old Schmid had wins in five of his last eight games (5-2-1), posting a 2.55 GAA and .898 SV%. The Golden Knights enter Friday's contest as slight +104 road underdogs against a Capitals team coming off a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Schmid has been so-so for the Golden Knights this season, he's got a strong record at 16-6-6 but has a 2.53 GAA and league average .895 SV%. The last time he suited up for Team Switzerland was in the 2024 World Championships, where he was 3-0-0 with a dazzling 0.86 GAAm .946 SV% and one shutout. He'll be a busy man on Friday vs. Canada, as Switzerland unsparingly enter the game as massive underdogs.

Adin Hill has struggled since returning from a lower-body injury, but the Golden Knights have also not received reliable goaltending from Schmid, who will return to the crease on Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks. The 25-year-old Schmid has lost three straight (0-2-1), posting a 3.30 GAA and .870 SV%. He has lost six of his last nine (4-3-2), with a 2.86 GAA and .882 SV%. Still, the Golden Knights enter Wednesday's contest as significant -284 home favourites against a reeling Canucks team that has scored two or fewer goals in five straight games (1-3-1).

The Golden Knights will turn back to Schmid between the pipes on Tuesday after starting Adin Hill in each of the team's previous two games. Schmid saw a personal four-game winning streak come to an end in his last start, when he allowed four goals on 28 shots in a 4-3 loss to the Bruins on Thursday. The 25-year-old netminder brings a 15-5-5 record and an .896 SV% into Tuesday night's matchup, where the Golden Knights enter action at -120 on the money line.

The Golden Knights relied heavily on Carter Hart when he made his debut in December, making Schmid an afterthought, but now with Hart (lower body) sidelined, the team seems keen on rotating between Schmid and the recently activated Adin Hill. The 25-year-old Schmid was excellent in his most recent game, saving 27 of 29 shots (.931 SV%) in a 7-2 win over the Nashville Predators, and has a 2.05 GAA and .917 SV% during a four-game winning streak. The Golden Knights enter Thursday's contest as -140 road favorites against a Boston Bruins team whose six-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday in a 6-2 loss to the Dallas Stars.

Adin Hill (lower body) could return to the crease as early as Thursday, but Schmid will remain the Golden Knights' de facto starting netminder for at least one more game, returning to the crease on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings. The 25-year-old Schmid has allowed three or fewer goals in three straight (2-0-1), and has a 2.49 GAA and .895 SV% through 23 games this season (13-4-5). The Golden Knights enter Wednesday's contest as -112 road favorites against a Los Angeles Kings team that has lost three of their last four (1-2-1).
