Akira Schmid News

Schmid was 10-6-3 with a 2.53 GAA and .908 SV% with the Utica Comet (AHL) and has been recalled Tuesday. Mackenzie Blackwood tweaked something in the Devils' morning skate so Schmid will backup Vitek Vanecek on Tuesday.

Schmid was recalled Thursday after Mackenzie Blackwood left practice due to a hand injury. The 22-year-old was excellent in his first showing with the Devils earlier in the season, with a 5-3-0 record, .932 SV% and 1.96 GAA.

Schmid will head back down to Utica (AHL) after doing a more than admirable job backing up the Devils' crease, posting an incredible 5-3-0 record, 1.96 GAA and .932 SV%. He heads back to the minors, where he was also strong prior to his promotion, with a 2-1-2 record, .918 SV% and 1.97 GAA in a short four game showing.

Schmid will miss Monday's game due to illness and Nico Daws has been recalled from the AHL to backup the Devils' crease while Schmid is out. The 22-year-old has been sensational in limited starts prior to the illness, posting a perfect 4-0-0 record alongside his 1.24 GAA and .953 SV%.

Mackenzie Blackwood was moved to IR on Wednesday, so Schmid was recalled to pair with Jon Gillies as the Devils' goaltending duo moving forward. Schmid, who was a fifth-round pick in 2018, has been excellent in the AHL, going 9-0-2 with a 1.54 GAA and .948 SV% in 11 games.
