The Hurricanes reassigned Alex Nedeljkovic to Charlotte (AHL).

With Petr Mrazek set to return from a concussion on Tuesday, Nedeljkovic will be the goalie to go to Charlotte and get some playing time. The 24-year-old netminder went 1-2-1 with a 3.05 GAA and .887 SV% during his call-up and returns to the AHL where he is 15-10-2 with a 2.51 GAA and .905 SV%.

Nedeljkovic struggled in his first start of the season, allowing four goals on 16 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Stars. Tonight he faces a Flyers team that is on a seven-game home winning streak while scoring 4.57 goals per game.

With both Petr Mrazek and James Reimer out with injuries, Nedeljkovic will make his season debut. The 24-year-old netminder was 15-10-2 with a 2.51 GAA and .905 SV% in 28 AHL games. Nedeljkovic has been outstanding in his first two NHL games, stopping 41 of the 43 shots (.953 SV%) that he's faced. His season debut will come against a Stars team that has gone 6-1-1 while scoring 2.88 goals per game in their last eight.

The Hurricanes have signed Alex Nedeljkovic to a two-year contract extension worth $1.45M ($725K AAV).

Nedeljkovic, who is viewed as one of the best goaltending prospects in the NHL, is coming off of an outstanding 2018-19 AHL campaign. Nedeljkovic led the AHL in wins (34) and GAA (2.26) en route to being named the league’s best netminder. He wasn’t done there, Nedeljkovic went 10-4-0 with a 2.34 GAA and .916 SV% in the AHL playoffs to help guide Charlotte to a Calder Cup Championship. With Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney both likely leaving in free agency, Nedeljkovic could see a lot of games at the NHL next year.

With Petr Mrazek out, Nedeljkovic comes up to serve as Curtis McElhinney’s backup on Wednesday. Nedeljkovic was excellent this season, going 34-14-1 with a 2.26 GAA and .916 SV% in 51 AHL games and was 3-1 with a 2.00 GAA and .923 SV% in four AHL playoff games before being called-up. It remains to be seen how long he will remain with Carolina.

Nedeljkovic is expected to serve as Petr Mrazek’s backup on Friday with Curtis McElhinney out with an undisclosed injury. Nedeljkovic, was a second-round pick in 2014, and has performed well in the AHL this season. The 22-year-old is 12-4-0 with a 2.94 GAA and .890 SV% in 18 games with the Checkers.

Eddie Lack had to be taken off on a stretcher in the Hurricanes’ OT loss to Detroit last night, so Nedeljkovic will come up to take his spot on the roster. The 21-year-old netminder has gone 8-14-0 with a 3.40 GAA and .881 SV% with Charlotte (AHL) and 4-4-0 with a 3.64 GAA and .885 SV% with Florida this season.

The Hurricanes have recalled Alex Nedeljkovic from Charlotte (AHL).

Nedeljkovic, 21, was a second round pick (No. 37 overall) in 2014 and this is his first NHL call-up. Cam Ward has started 19 games in a row, so either Nedeljkovic is up to serve as his backup or so the Hurricanes can get a look at him at the NHL level. The American born netminder has gone 5-12-0 with a 3.30 GAA and .884 SV% with Charlotte and 2-0-0 with 2.83 GAA and.921 SV% in a brief stint with the Florida Everblades (ECHL).
