Brooks Orpik News

Orpik was removed from the ice on a stretcher after he was taken to the ice, then punched in the head while prone by Bruins winger Shawn Thornton.

Orpik was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was alert and conscious. He was scheduled to accompany teammates on a return flight to Pittsburgh, coach Dan Bylsma said. “I think he was out (unconscious) on the ice for a period of time, and I think that means he's got a concussion,” Bylsma said, adding that Orpik underwent a battery of tests and will be re-evaluated in Pittsburgh. Orpik, per club policy on injured players, was not available for comment.

The Penguins have arrived in Winnipeg, but the team reports that center Evgeni Malkin and three other injured players did not make the two-game trip, which includes a game against the Jets on Monday and a game at Minnesota on Tuesday. The others who didn't travel are Sidney Crosby (concussion), Brooks Orpik (abdomen) and Dustin Jeffrey (knee). They have not played this season.

Don't expect to see any of these four players in the lineup over the next two road games. Through the team's first six games, they boast a league-best eight points.

Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik has been there, done that, but now he's taking a different approach as he comes back from his second offseason surgery to repair an abdominal hernia.

When he returns, expect the veteran to man the top defensive pairing. Orpik's health should lead to keeping the puck away from Marc-Andre Fleury. Good to know whether he is in the lineup or not since his 9 career goals in 512 career games won't help your squad too much.

Orpik is not expected to start the season opener after sitting out all preseason. Orpik's health should lead to keeping the puck away from Marc-Andre Fleury. Good to know whether he is in the lineup or not since his 9 career goals in 512 career games won't help your squad too much.

As expected, the Penguins are limiting Brooks Orpik for much of camp and being cautious with him after undergoing hernia surgery this summer. The Penguins have been optimistic that Orpik would be ready for the start of the season, but the Penguins aren’t sure at this point.

Sounds like the team prefers not to rush Orpik back into the lineup but the rugged defender is not far off returning. If he can't make the team, look for Alexandre Picard and Ben Lovejoy to take his place on the blue line.
