The Red Wings re-signed Darren Helm to a five-year deal worth $19.25 million ($3.85M AAV).

It was believed that Helm’s time with the Red Wings had come to an end and he was going to hit free agency, but Detroit came in with a five-year deal in the final hour to lock the 29-year-old up through the 2020-21 season. Helm is coming off of a sub-par year, having posted just 13 goals and 13 assists (26 points) in 77 games.

Helm (shoulder) will return to the Red Wings lineup on Saturday.

Helm missed the first four games of the regular season after separating his shoulder in the first training camp practice. Helm will replace Landon Ferraro in the lineup and is expected to start on the fourth line with Drew Miller and Joakim Andersson. In 2014-15 Helm set career-highs with 15 goals ad 33 points.

Helm will miss 2-4 weeks with a separated shoulder.

Helm suffered a grade 1 slight separated shoulder in the first day of training camp on Thursday. Helm has had a difficult time staying healthy throughout his career and this is not the way he wanted to start his 2015-16 season. If he misses just two weeks, he could be ready for the Red Wings season opener, but if he misses four weeks he would miss the first four or five games of the Red Wings’ season.

Helm (concussion) will be a game-time decision on Saturday.

Helm confirmed that he would be in the lineup tomorrow afternoon, but Mike Babcock was less committal about Helm playing. Coach Babcock said that Helm will take pre-game warmups and then they will see how Helm feels before deciding if he plays. He would centre the fourth line with Cory Emmerton and Landon Ferraro on his wings with Teemu Pulkkinen taking a seat.
