John Erskine News

Defenseman John Erskine is expected to return to the lineup. He has missed the past four contests after falling on his surgically-repaired left shoulder in practice back on Nov. 20. The blueliner said he’s good to go.

Erskine could draw in for Jeff Schultz tonight. As a favored player of the old regime it will be interesting to see how he reacts, and is played, under Dale Hunter.

Erskine missed Monday night's game against the Phoenix Coyotes, and his status moving forward is not totally certain. Boudreau said Erskine's injury is “definitely not long-term.”

Tough break for Erskine, who was establishing himself as a regular on the blue line. Expect rookie Dmitri Orlov to stay in the lineup in the meantime.

Erskine took several penalty killing shifts with Roman Hamrlik on Monday and afterward seemed hopeful that he’ll be cleared to play, possibly as soon as Tuesday night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Should Erskine be able to play, look for him to replace rookie Sean Collins in the lineup. Despite his physical presence, he holds a very limited fantasy hockey value with only a slight chance of posting a solid +/- with some PIM.

John Erskine, who is recovering from offseason surgery on his left shoulder, has not yet been cleared for contact. As for whether the rugged defenseman will go on the trip to Edmonton and Vancovuver, Boudreau wasn’t sure.

Erskine has an opening with Mike Green questionable but may not be clear for contact. Regardless, he holds no fantasy hockey value.

John Erskine isn't trying to trick anyone. But despite the absence of a no-contact jersey again at Tuesday's practice, the big Capitals defenseman has not been cleared to take contact. He said afterward that he probably won't be cleared for two more weeks.

Erkine's injury leaves the team with only six healthy d-men. He played a career high 73 games last season but failed to eclipse 100 PIM and holds close to no fantasy value outside of some PIM and possibly a decent plus/minus.

That means the Caps start with six healthy defensemen and John Erskine and that Mathieu Perreault was the winner of the battle for the final roster spot.

Defenseman John Erskine, who had been slow to recover from shoulder surgery, was not wearing the bright orange no-contact jersey he had been sporting all camp.

Erskine, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, has not yet been cleared for contact in practice, and yesterday the veteran defenseman didn’t sound hopeful that he would be able to appear in a preseason game.

Erskine was scheduled to make the bottom pairing as a tough guy. After missing most of the preseason Jeff Schultz looks more fit for the role. Known mostly for his fighting, Erskine never broke 100 PIM in a season.

The Caps play four times in the next week, but Boudreau was not optimistic about Erskine being able to get much action. “At this stage, I don't know,” the coach said. “I would hope that maybe the last one, but you never know.”

John Erskine knows he’ll need to fight for playing time and a regular spot in the lineup this year given the Capitals’ depth on defense, but what remains unclear is when he will be able to take full contact in practice as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.

Despite his pugilistic playing style, Erskine never topped 100 PIM or played more than last year's 73 games. If his 11 career goals in 396 games are not enough to steer you away from him, an injured shoulder should be enough deterrence.
