The Devils have signed Frederik Gauthier to a one-year, two-way contract.

Gauthier is a former first-round pick of the Maple Leafs, who spent 2021 with the Arizona Coyotes. He played most of his time in the AHL, tallying two goals and five assists (seven points) in 18 games with Tucson. He'll likely report to Binghamton (AHL) to start the 2022 season.

Gauthier will be a healthy scratch on Wednesday.

Gauthier has had a solid season as the Maple Leafs fourth line centre, playing just 8:34 TOI/gm. With Auston Matthews returning tonight, Nazem Kadri will move back to the third line and Par Lindholm will centre the fourth line, which leaves Gauthier as the odd man out.

Gauthier has been a healthy scratch for the first three games of the season but will add some size to the Leafs lineup in Dallas tonight. Gauthier doesn’t bring a lot off offence to the lineup, but is a solid two-way, fourth line centre.

Gauthier was the No.21 overall pick in 2013 but doesn’t project to be much more than an AHLer or fourth line centre. The 23-year-old had just 18 points (7G / 11A) in 57 games with the Toronto Marlies (AHL) in 2018 and has been passed on the depth chart by Par Lindholm, who is expected to centre the Leafs’ fourth line to start next season.

Nikita Soshnikov had to be recalled by today according to a clause in his contract so Gauthier is the victim of a numbers game and returns to the Marlies having not appeared in an NHL game during his call-up—he has two assists in eight games with the Marlies.
