The Sharks have traded James Sheppard to the Rangers for a 2016 4th round pick.
Sheppard is a versatile forward who can play all three positions. He has played primarily on the Sharks third line, tallying 16 points (5G / 11A) in 57 games this season. He has never really lived up to his 9th overall selection in 2006, but he is good big-body, two-way forward who will help the Rangers bottom-6.
The Sharks have assigned James Sheppard (knee) to Worcester (AHL) for a conditioning stint.
Sheppard was skating with the Sharks and nearing a return from his knee injury, but San Jose has sent him down to get him back into game-shape, before he returns to the lineup. There is no word on who will be headed back to the minors when Sheppard is healthy, but it will likely be Chris Tierney.

The Sharks have agreed to a one-year deal with restricted free-agent James Sheppard.
Sheppard, 26, had 20 points (4G / 16A) in 67 games with the Sharks last season. The regular season was a struggle, but Sheppard had two goals and four assists in seven postseason games. He has yet to develop into the scorer that made him the ninth overall pick in 2006. Sheppard has just 73 points (16 G / 57A) in 323 career NHL games.

Sheppard, 24, signed a one-year, two-way deal worth $825,000.
Sheppard isn't fantasy relevant.
He will not play for the remainder of the season in either the NHL or AHL, as he would need to clear waivers to remain in Worcester.
Sheppard will remain with the team for the rest of the season and should be in great shape to compete next year.
Conditioning stints have time limit. To keep Sheppard in WOR, he would have had to clear waivers. And NHL rosters can expand after 2/27.
Sounds like Sheppard could get back on the ice soon. He hasn't played a game in nearly two years.
James Sheppard update: When #sjsharks went on long roadie, he went to WOR to continue rehab. Formal conditioning assignment began last nite.
Expect Sheppard to return in around two weeks.

Sheppard last played on April 8th, 2010. Expect some rust when he finally gets back into the lineup.
Good to see James Sheppard today. Doing a lot of talking with #sjsharks coaches and teammates, likely trying to absorb everything.
Sheppard could be getting back in the lineup sometime this month. He will be making both his 2012 and Shark debut when he does.
But Tommy Wingels did take part in the drills again, and James Sheppard was a full participant as well.

James Sheppard skated today, said he is aiming to play in a game, ahl or NHL by March 1st. #SJSharks
Sheppard has missed close to two full seasons. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the speed of the game.
Hmmm. James Sheppard just skated onto the ice here - not wearing orange "no contact" jersey. Maybe they forgot to pack it.
Sheppard has not played in over a year and likely will need a few more days before drawing in.
goaltender Antero Niittymaki and forward James Sheppard have been taken off of I.R., according to the team’s official website.
Considering Sheppard hasn't played in well over a year he figures to play the two-week maximum in the AHL.
Still no timetable for Sheppard's return from knee damage, but advised both he and Niittymaki will be traveling to DAL-COL for practice time
Sheppard just returned to the ice so getting back in game shape should be hard. Expect him to miss at least another month as he gets more comfortable with his surgically damaged knee.
