Leivo will miss at least the next two games due to back spasms.

Leivo has been moved to IR due to back spasms that forced him to leave Wednesday’s game in Ottawa. Leivo has been ruled out of tonight’s game and Saturday’s game in Toronto, so moving him to IR was just a formality to active his replacement Brandon Sutter. Leivo is eligible to come off of IR for next Thursday’s game vs. the Coyotes.

Leivo has picked up just six points (4G / 2A) while playing a limited role in 27 games with the Maple Leafs this season. Leivo has produced strong numbers at lower levels but has just 28 points (14G / 14A) in 84 career NHL games. He is expected to play a larger role with his new team.

Leivo, 23, spent the majority of the 2015-16 season with the Toronto Marlies, but also appeared in 12 games with the Maple Leafs. During his time in the NHL he scored five goals, but was much more effective in the AHL, collecting 17 goals and 31 assists (48 points) in 51 games. Leivo will try and crack the Leafs’ roster during training camp.

Leivo has 30 points (11G / 19A) in 35 games with the Marlies this season. He has not played a game with the leads this season, but has two goals and one assist in 16 career NHL games. Leivo will likely be in the lineup on Wednesday with James van Riemsdyk out for the nest month and a half.

Leivo has been recalled on an emergency basis because of the injury to Daniel Winnik. Leivo is expected to make his season debut on Saturday vs. the Rangers. He has one goal and three assists in eight games with the Marlies and one goal and one assist in seven career NHL games.
