Phaneuf will miss his 10th straight game with a hand injury that he suffered on January 21st. He suffered a setback last week and will continue to be held out of the lineup.

Phaneuf skated on his own prior to practice, but did not join the team for the full session. This suggests that his timetable has been pushed back and that it is unlikely that he will be in the lineup vs. New York on Tuesday.

Phaneuf has already been ruled out of tonight’s game for the sixth consecutive time, so placing him on IR creates an open roster spot until he can return.

Phaneuf was not at Maple Leafs practice again on Friday, the defenseman has not practiced since Sunday and reportedly spent awhile in the training room following Wednesday's win over the Rangers. Whatever is ailing Phaneuf, must not be too serious as he will play on Saturday against the Flyers.

Phaneuf has one goal and one assist with a plus-5 rating in his last seven games. He has totalled 24 points (6G / 18A) and leads the Leafs in plus/minus at plus-20 through 61 games.

Phaneuf is in his fourth full season with the Maple Leafs and has averaged 24:21 TOI while posting four goals, 11 assists (15 points) and a plus-13 rating in 39 games. "Dion is our team leader and has been a pillar in our building process," said Leafs GM Dave Nonis. "He has proven to be a very durable and reliable defenceman in all facets of the game. He plays big minutes in every situation for us and we're pleased to have him under contract for the next seven seasons."

Phaneuf is ineligible to play tomorrow vs. Los Angeles or Thursday in St. Louis. He will draw back into the lineup on Saturday when the Blackhawks come to Toronto.
