Backlund will return to Calgary after suffering a concussion at the World Cup of Hockey.

Backlund suffered a concussion while representing Team Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey and he will return to Calgary where he will be reevaluated this week. The 27-year-old has had a tough time staying healthy during his career, but is coming off of a year where he played 82-games for the first time in his career. With two weeks before the start of the regular season, Backlund could be ready for opening night.

The Flames re-signed Mikael Backlund to a three-year deal worth $10.725M.

Backlund, 26, missed 30 games in 2014-15 after undergoing abdominal surgery in late-October. Despite the injury, he managed to post the highest points-per-game of he career by tallying 10 goals and 17 assists (27 points) in 52 games. Backlund is a strong two-way forward who plays in all situations for the Flames.

Backlund has been out since October 28th because of abdomen surgery. He recorded four points (1G / 3A) in 11 games before getting hurt. Tonight he will return to the lineup on the Flames’ third line with Paul Byron and Mason Raymond.
