Backstrom will make his season debut on Sunday.

Sunday will mark Backstrom's first start since January 11th. Darcy Kuemper has had an excellent start to the season, but the Wild want to get Backstrom some action early in the season. He was 5-11-2 with a 3.02 GAA and .899 SV% in a terrible 2013-14 season. He is a solid option when he gets the call, but he draws a brutal matchup today.

Backstrom is likely out for the remainder of the season, likely needs surgery says GM Chuck Fletcher.

The Wild looked like they were setup perfectly with Backstrom backing-up Josh Harding, who was playing amazing. But since then Harding has had complications with his multiple sclerosis and now Backstrom is likely out for the rest of the season with an abdominal issue that probably needs surgery. That leaves the WIld with young Darcy Kuemper and Ilya Bryzgalov, who they acquire this morning .

WIld head coach Mike Yeo said he hopes that Backstrom will return to practice on Wednesday. Yeo said that Backstrom is dealing with a "mid-body" injury. The Wild play on Thursday and Friday, they are hopeful that Darcy Kuemper and Backstrom will split those starts.
