Peter Budaj News

Budaj will start Tuesday in New Jersey.

Budaj split last season between the Kings and Lightning. He started a whopping 51 games with the Kings because of a Jonathan Quick injury and appeared in seven contests with the Lightning following a mid-season trade. Overall, he was a 30-game winner while posting a 2.18 GAA, .915 SV% and seven shutouts. Don’t expect him to replicate those numbers, but he is a solid spot-start option on most nights.

Budaj allowed four goals on 34 shots in a loss in Pittsburgh on March 3rd. Tampa Bay was badly outplayed by the Penguins and Budaj stood tall in his Lightning debut and tonight he will make his second start. He will face a Rangers team that played last night and who have won three of their last four.

Budaj will get thrown right into the fire in his first start with the Lightning as he goes up against the NHL’s highest scoring team on the road. Budaj was excellent replacing Jonathan Quick in L.A. this season, going 27-20-3 with a 2.12 GAA and .917 SV%. However, he will likely find it tougher playing behind a less-defensive Lightning team.

The Lightning acquired Peter Budaj, Erik Cernak, a 2017 seventh round pick and a conditional draft pick from the Kings for Ben Bishop and a 2017 fifth round pick.

With Jonathan Quick missing the first four and a half months with a groin injury, Budaj filled in admirably as the Kings’ No.1. The veteran netminder went 27-20-3 with a 2.12 GAA and .917 SV% in 53 games while Quick was out, but heads to Tampa Bay where he will fight with Andrei Vasilevskiy for playing time in the Lightning’s crease.

Budaj has played very well this season, going 25-15-3, but he allowed two goals on 29 shots in a 2-1 loss in his first start vs. Tampa Bay.
