Pontus Aberg News

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Maple Leafs have signed Pontus Aberg to a one-year contract.

Aberg is a former second-round pick of the Predators but Nashville gave up on him in 2018 and he ended up playing in Anaheim and Minnesota last year where he totalled 12 goals and 13 assists (25 points) in 59 games. It’s tough to envision Aberg making the Maple Leafs opening night roster but he could be an extra or one of the first AHL call-ups given his NHL experience.

The Wild acquired Pontus Aberg from the Ducks for Justin Kloos.

Aberg had 11 goals and eight assists (19 points) in his first 37 games with the Ducks but has been a healthy scratch for the last four games. Aberg fell out of favour with head coach Randy Carlyle so he gets moved to Minnesota, where he will fight with Matt Hendricks and J.T. Brown for playing time in the bottom-6.

The Ducks sent Pontus Aberg to San Diego (AHL) after he cleared waivers.

Aberg played 13:47 TOI and was a minus-1 with two PIMS in his Ducks debut but was placed on waivers shortly after. The former second-round pick has had a hard time sticking around in the NHL, so he returns to the AHL where he has 35 goals and 23 assists (58 points) in his last 60 games.

The Ducks have claimed Pontus Aberg off of waivers from the Oilers.

Aberg picked up eight points (2G / 6A) in 16 games with the Oilers after being claimed from Nashville. The 25-year-old has registered just 18 points (5G / 13A) in 68 career NHL games. He landed on waivers after the emergence of Ty Rattie and Kailer Yamamoto in training camp and heads to Anaheim, who lost Corey Perry to knee surgery in the preseason.

Aberg was a second-round pick in 2012 and has collected 10 points (3G / 7A) in 52 games with the Predators. He hasn’t quite emerged in the NHL but has been excellent in the AHL—he has 35 goals and 23 assists (58 points) in his last 60 AHL games. He will likely immediately step into the Oilers lineup.
