Cossa was drafted 15th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and was at times considered the team's goalie of the future after excelling at the AHL level. That said, he was buried until some strong goaltending depth in the organization and will ultimately get a shot with the Utah Mammoth after being acquired in a trade for a first-round pick last week. The 23-year-old goalie had a solid 2.33 GAA and .915 SV% last season in 39 games (26-8-4) with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL).

With Detroit already having Michal Postava and Trey Augustine in their goaltending prospect pipeline, Detroit has traded Sebastian Cossa to Utah for the No.23 overall pick (2026). The 23-year-old goaltender led Grand Rapids (AHL) with an impressive 26-8-4 record, .915 SV% and 2.33 GAA in 2025-26 and is expected to play a key role in Utah's crease in 2026-27.

With John Gibson returning from an upper-body injury, the Red Wings have reassigned Cossa to the AHL. Cossa, the 15th-overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has performed remarkably well at the AHL level this season, registering a 1.99 GAA and .927 SV% in 31 games (24-4-3) with Grand Rapids.

Cossa's recall suggests one of Cam Talbot or Alex Lyon will be unavailable for Tuesday's game in Colorado, as Petr Mrazek was already announced out with an undisclosed injury. The 15th-overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has performed well at the AHL level this season, registering a 19-11-5 record and a .913 SV%.

Cossa's reassignment to the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) likely indicates that Cam Talbot (lower body) is ready to return to the Red Wings' crease. The 22-year-old Cossa was the 15th overall pick of the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and is sporting a 2.21 GAA and .925 SV% in 14 games (9-4-1) with the Griffins (AHL) this season. He got his first taste of NHL action earlier this week, entering a contest in relief of Ville Husso, saving 12 of 14 shots (.857 SV%) in a shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

With Cam Talbot (lower body) injured on Sunday, in addition to Alex Lyon (lower body) already being sidelined, the Red Wings have recalled Cossa from the AHL. The 22-year-old Cossa was the 15th overall pick of the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. The 22-year-old has yet to play an NHL game and is sporting a 2.21 GAA and .925 SV% in 14 games (9-4-1) with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) this season.
