The Capitals have acquired Tom Gilbert from the Kings for future considerations.

Gilbert has only appeared in 18 NHL games this season, recording one goal and four assists (five points). During his time in Ontario, the 11-year veteran tallied one assist in five games and will report to Hershey (AHL) following his trade to Washington.

Gilbert was a healthy scratch for the first two games of the season, but will replace Matt Greene in the lineup on Tuesday. Gilbert had just one goal and one assist in 45 games with the Canadiens last year.

Gilbert, 33, served as an extra defenseman with Montreal last year, appearing in 45 games. Gilbert had solid offensive numbers early in his career, but had just five goals and nine assists (14 points) in 117 games with the Habs over the last two years. Look for Gilbert to be a sixth or seventh defenseman in Los Angeles.

Gilbert will undergo season-ending left knee surgery.

Gilbert was scratched from Monday’s game and listed as day-to-day, but the Canadiens announced that he will need to undergo knee surgery, which will end his 2015-16 season. With Gilbert out, the Habs have recalled Victor Bartley from St. John’s (AHL).

Gilbert missed the final two games of the regular season, but was at practice this morning. Gilbert will try to get back into game-shape in order to be ready for Game 1 on Wednesday.

Gilbert was held out of Thursday’s game with an upper-body injury and he is now listed as day-to-day. He will likely be held out of Saturday’s lineup to ensure he is 100% heading into the playoffs.

Gilbert was injured in Saturday’s game against the Sharks and it will force him to miss at least the next two games. With Gilbert out, expect Nate Beaulieu to get back in on the Habs blue line.

Gilbert, 31, had 28 points (3G / 25A) in 73 games with the Panthers last season. He is a good puck moving defenseman who will likely slide into the hole left by the Josh Gorges trade.

Gilbert, who had a hot start to the season, had been in a huge offensive rut as of late. His season will wrap up with him totalling 28 points (3G / 25A) in 73 games. With the Panthers well out of the playoffs, Gilbert will undergo the surgery now with recovery expected to be about 6 weeks.

The Florida Panthers have signed Tom Gilbert to a one-year contract. He had been in camp on a tryout basis.

Gilbert, 30, had three goals and 13 points in 43 games for the Minnesota Wild in 2012-13. He joined the Wild in a midseason trade the previous campaign after parts of six seasons with the Edmonton Oilers.
