Rangers Acquire McQuaid From Bruins

The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Adam McQuaid from the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenseman Steven Kampfer, a fourth-round draft pick in 2019, and a conditional seventh-round draft pick. The 31-year old McQuaid is going on his ninth

season in the NHL and has 13 goals and 53 assists in 462 career games. He’s spent his entire career in Boston up until this point and won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2010.

McQuaid suffered a broken right fibula in October of last season that caused him to miss 36 games. He returned in January and was the Bruins’ sixth defenseman down the stretch, averaging under 16 minutes a night in ice time. He is a formidable penalty killer and averaged over 2 minutes of shorthanded ice time a game last season. The Rangers’ needed a capable penalty-killing defenseman after moving Ryan McDonagh at last year’s trade deadline. With a career ATOI of 16:18, don’t expect McQuaid to be anything more than a bottom-pair defenseman for the Rangers this season.

Kampfer returns to the Bruins, the team he made his NHL debut with back in 2011-12. Kampfer is a journeyman of sorts, having played 3 full AHL seasons between his rookie year in 2011-12 and his next NHL appearance in 2014-15 for the Florida Panthers. Since then he’s been able to survive in the NHL as a 7^th defenseman, playing in just 105 games in the last four seasons, including 22 games last year with the Rangers. He is likely to assume a similar role with the Bruins this season.
