The New York Rangers have signed Kaapo Kakko to a two-year contract, the team announced on Thursday. According to Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the deal is worth $2.1 million annually.

The Rangers selected Kakko with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft following an impressive showing as a teenager playing in Finland’s top professional league.

He cracked the Rangers’ roster immediately as an 18-year-old in 2019-20 and scored 10 goals and 23 points across 66 games as a rookie. Since then, Kakko has scored 16 goals and 35 points in 91 games over his last two seasons.

Kakko was a restricted free agent this summer following the conclusion of his entry-level contract. He’ll again be a restricted free agent when this deal expires after the 2023-24 season.
