Day Two is rolling.

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Friday morning, the second day of the 2022 NHL Draft, that they’ve acquired goaltender Ville Husso from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a third-round pick.

Shortly after the trade was announced, Frank Seravalli reported that the Red Wings had signed Husso to a three-year contract extension worth $4.75 million annually. Husso was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 13.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Blues from the 2014 draft, Husso enjoyed an unexpected breakout season in 2021-22. He made his NHL debut in 2021, posting an .893 save percentage in 17 games, and then broke out with a .919 save percentage in 40 games this season.

The Red Wings will now move forward with a goaltending tandem of Husso and Alex Nedeljkovic, who they acquired last summer in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. Thomas Greiss, who the team signed back in the summer of 2020, has reached the end of that two-year contract and will become a free agent.

For the Blues, it makes sense that they didn’t opt to buy into Husso’s breakout season, as they recently inked Jordan Binnington to a six-year contract worth $36 million to be the team’s starting goaltender.
