San Jose Sharks hire David Quinn as head coach

The San Jose Sharks have their guy behind the bench.

The club is expected to name David Quinn the 11th head coach in franchise history, multiple reports confirmed Thursday night. The news was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Quinn takes over from Bob Boughner, who coached the team for the last two and a half seasons.

His name has been linked to the Sharks since Mike Grier was named general manager. The pair date back to their own respective times at Boston University. Grier played there between 1993-1996 before his 14-year NHL career kicked off, while Quinn played there from 1984-1987, before stints as an assistant coach and later head coach.

Quinn joins the Sharks after spending last year working with the USA National program, where he was head coach at the Olympic Games and World Championships. His extensive coaching history dates back to the 1993, when he joined Northeastern University as an assistant coach. He’s worked at multiple levels, however, spending time along the way as the U.S. National Development Program head coach between 2002-2004.

Most notably, Quinn was the head coach at Boston University between 2013 and 2018 before he joined the New York Rangers as their head coach — a role he held for three seasons. He coached the Rangers to a 96-87-23 record in his time there, only making the playoffs once.
