Seattle Kraken sign Martin Jones to one-year contract

The Seattle Kraken have signed goaltender Martin Jones to a one-year contract worth $2 million, the club announced Wednesday.

Jones, 32, posted a 12–18–3 record and a .900 save percentage in 35 games with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2021–22 regular season.

Jones will almost certainly start the 2022–23 season as Philipp Grubauer’s backup goaltender. Incumbent Chris Driedger is expected to miss the first three months of the season while recovering from an operation to repair his torn right ACL.

Undrafted from the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen, Jones latched on with the Los Angeles Kings in the early 2010s and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2014 as Jonathan Quick’s backup.

Jones subsequently moved on to become the starter for the San Jose Sharks in 2015. While he posted strong numbers in his first three seasons with the Sharks, Jones’ play significantly declined in his final three years in the Bay Area. He departed San Jose for Philadelphia last summer on a one-year deal.

In 396 career regular-season games with Los Angeles, San Jose, and Philadelphia, Jones has posted a 198–150–32 record, 25 shutouts, and a .907 save percentage. Grubauer, his primary competition for starts in the Seattle crease, went 18–31–5 with an .889 save percentage with the Kraken in 2021–22.
