Senators Trade Hoffman to the Sharks for Boedker

The Ottawa Senators have traded Mike Hoffman, prospect Cody Donaghey and a 2020 fifth-round pick to the San Jose Sharks for Mikkel Boedker, prospect Julius Bergman and a 2020 sixth-round pick.

Hoffman has two-years left on his contract that pays him $5.187 million AAV and also includes a modified no-trade clause. Hoffman recorded 22 goals and 34 assists (56 points) in 82 games this past season. The 28-year-old winger ranks 24th in the NHL in goals (104) and 44th in points (224) over the last four seasons.

Hoffman’s trade value obviously took a hit last week when Erik Karlsson’s wife, Melinda, filed for an order of protection related to allegations of harassment against Hoffman’s girlfriend, Monika Caryk.

Donaghey, 22, heads to San Jose with Hoffman after picking up nine goals and seven assists (16 points) in 54 games with the Brampton Beast (ECHL) this season.

Boedker, 28, has two-years left with a $4.0M AAV cap-hit, and is coming off of back-to-back disappointing seasons in San Jose. The Danish winger averaged 20 goals with 32 assists (52 points) per 82-games from 2014-to-2016 but recorded just 25 goals and 38 assists (63 points) in 155 games over the last two years.

Bergman, 22, is coming off of his third full AHL season. The 2014 second-round pick (No.46 overall) set a career-high with 10 goals but added just 10 assists (20 points) in 65 games with the Barracuda. The Swedish defenseman will very likely report to Belleville (AHL).
