Strength of Schedule Explained
Strength of Schedule FAQ
Strength of Schedule (SOS) represents how difficult a team’s matchups are over a given period. It factors in the success and skill level of the opponents a team faces.
SOS is usually determined using the combined record of a team’s opponents or through advanced formulas that weigh opponent performance, scoring margin, and strength of opponent’s opponents.
It provides context to a team’s record. A team with an easier schedule might look stronger than it really is, while a team with a tough schedule may be better than its record indicates.
Fantasy managers can use SOS to target players facing weak defenses or avoid those going up against top-tier opponents—especially during playoff weeks when matchups matter most.
Bettors use SOS to identify undervalued or overvalued teams in the betting market. Teams emerging from a tough stretch may be primed to bounce back, while others benefiting from easy games might be overrated.
Yes. As teams win or lose, their perceived strength changes, which in turn affects every other team’s SOS dynamically throughout the season.
