Colorado Avalanche News

Miner is in the starter's crease at Colorado's morning skate.

With Mackenzie Blackwood (lower body) sidelined, Miner was given a rare glimpse of NHL action on Saturday and made the most of his opportunity, saving all 29 shots he faced for his first career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. In limited action, the 24-year-old Miner has a 1.81 GAA and .925 SV% in five career NHL appearances (1-1-2). The Avalanche enter the action on Monday as sizable -227 home favorites against a surging Toronto Maple Leafs team that has points in nine straight games (7-0-2).

Toews (upper-body) remains week-to-week but is expected back before the Olympics.

Toews briefly exited Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes because of an upper-body injury, but returned to the game late in the third period. However, he did not play on Sunday and has been sidelined since, with a return in two weeks being the "best case" scenario. The 31-year-old Toews is averaging 22:20 time-on-ice and has 13 points (1G / 2A) in 40 games this season.

Landeskog (upper-body) is week-to-week with his return expected close to the Olympic break.

Landeskog collided with the opposing goal post in Sunday's game against the Florida Panthers and needed assistance being helped off the ice. The Avalanche faithful breathed a sigh of relief when the team revealed the injury was to his upper-body, not his knees, which had previously sidelined him for nearly three seasons. The 33-year-old Landeskog has 22 points (7G / 15A) in 41 games this season and has started to show signs of his old self, with 15 points (5G / 10A) in his last 19 games.

Blackwood (lower-body) returned to the ice on Thursday but is still considered week-to-week.

Blackwood has not played since New Year's Eve due to a lower-body injury and is still week-to-week. Trent Miner was recalled from the Eagles (AHL) in Blackwood's absence, but Scott Wedgewood has played every game since and should continue to have a heavy workload until Blackwood returns from injury.

Wedgewood will start vs. Ottawa on Thursday.

After a remarkable 31-2-7 start to the season, the Avalanche, for the first time, have gone two games without a point (0-2-0), and hope for a strong performance from Wedgewood to help end their mini-slump. The 33-year-old Wedgewood has been excellent all season, but has shown signs of being human over the past two weeks, allowing three or more goals in four of five games (2-2-0), posting a .876 SV%. He has a 2.20 GAA and .917 SV% in 27 games this season (18-3-4). The Avalanche enter Tuesday's contest as sizable -257 home favorites against an Ottawa Senators team that has lost five of their last seven games (2-4-1).

Wedgewood will start in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Wedgewood played well in Colorado's most recent game, saving 23 of 25 shots (.920 SV%), but the team did not offer ample goal support as they fell 2-1 to the Florida Panthers for just their third regulation loss of the season. The 33-year-old Wedgewood already has a career-high 18 wins this season, along with a 2.17 GAA and .918 SV%. The Avalanche enter the action on Tuesday as slight -108 road favorites against a Tampa Bay Lightning team on a seven-game winning streak.

Toews briefly exited Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes because of an upper-body injury, but returned to the game late in the third period. However, he did not play on Sunday and is now expected to be out of the lineup indefinitely. The 31-year-old Toews is averaging 22:20 time-on-ice and has 13 points (1G / 2A) in 40 games this season.

Landeskog collided with the opposing goal post in Sunday's game against the Florida Panthers and needed assistance being helped off the ice. The team insisted the injury is not knee-related, which is encouraging, given he missed nearly three years due to a recurring knee injury. The 33-year-old Landeskog has 22 points (7G / 15A) in 41 games this season and has started to show signs of his old self, with 15 points (5G / 10A) in his last 19 games.
