If he misses time it will be a huge loss for the Avalanche who just announced yesterday that their captain Gabriel Landeskog will miss 12 weeks due to knee surgery.

Helm has been battling an undisclosed injury throughout the preseason and will not play in the season opener on Wednesday. Head coach Jared Bender said that Helm is "getting close."

The Avalanche had provided very few details regarding Landeskog's status, so the fact that he's expected to return to the ice this week, suggests he won't be sidelined for an extended period of time. Expect updates to be more and more frequent as he ramps up his rehab.

Vesey was with the Rangers on a PTO and turned it into a one-year deal. Vesey broke into the NHL with the Rangers back in 2017 and played with them for three seasons. Since then, he's been with the Sabres, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Devils over the last three seasons. Most recently, he had 15 points (8G / 7A) in 68 games with New Jersey in 2021-22.

MacKinnon hopes to be ready and healthy for the Avalanche's opening game Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks. The 27-year-old signed an eight-year, $100,800,000 contract extension this past September after finishing 2021-22 with 32 goals and 88 points in 65 games. It was his fifth straight season finishing above a point-per-game and his seventh straight with 200 or more shots on goal.

Landeskog is dealing with an injury from last season and will not skate "anytime soon," according to head coach Jared Bednar. Landeskog will miss the start of the season, but it's unclear how long he will be sidelined.
