Markstrom will start vs. Montreal on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Division-leading New Jersey Devils will turn to Markstrom between the pipes on Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens. Markstrom has struggled this season, posting an ugly 4.17 GAA and .875 SV% in five games (3-2-0). That said, since signing a two-year contract extension last week ($6 million AAV), Markstrom has only played one game, which was his best performance of the season, saving 43 of 44 shots (.977 SV%) in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The Devils enter Thursday's contest as -134 home favorites against a Canadiens team that leads the Eastern Conference with a 9-3-1 record.

New Jersey has signed Jacob Markstrom to a two-year extension worth $6 million AAV ($12M total).

The extension comes as a major vote of confidence for Markstrom, who has somewhat underperformed since joining the Devils ahead of the 2024-25 season. The 35-year-old netminder owns an impressive 28-18-6 record over parts of two seasons in New Jersey, but has posted just an .895 SV% along with a 2.67 GAA. The extension will take Markstrom through his age 38 season in 2027-28.

Jacob Markstrom
Brown (undisclosed) missed practice on Friday and is questionable for Saturday vs. Los Angeles.

Brown has played all 11 games for the Devils this season, but was surprisingly absent from practice on Friday and could be at jeopardy of missing his first game of the season on Saturday. The 31-year-old Brown is averaging 15:47 time-on-ice and has six points (5G / 1A) in 11 games this season.

Allen will start on Thursday in San Jose.

The Devils' eight-game winning streak snapped in Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Colorado Avalanche when Jacob Markstrom made his return to the crease from a lower-body injury. Markstrom's poor performance on Tuesday adds further fuel to Jake Allen's case for more time between the pipes. The 35-year-old Allen has been exceptional to start the 2025-26 season, posting a 1.93 GAA and .923 SV% in six appearances (5-0-0). The Devils enter the action on Thursday as sizable -217 road favorites against a Sharks team with a 2-6-2 record.

Jake Allen
Markstrom will start in Colorado on Tuesday.

Given the Devils' eight-game winning streak, the team saw no need to rush Markstrom back into action, serving as the backup to Jake Allen in his return to the lineup on Sunday. That said, he will return to the crease on Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche and hopes to build on the momentum his team built in his absence. The 35-year-old Markstrom has a 3.89 GAA and .845 SV% in three games this season (2-1-0). New Jersey enters the action as a +143 road underdog against a Colorado team amid a four-game losing skid (0-1-3).

Pesce (upper-body) is expected to be out for at least a month.

Pesce exited Sunday's 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche in the first period after only 6:07 time-on-ice due to an upper-body injury. The 30-year-old defenseman has been a stabilizing force on New Jersey's blueline, averaging 19:39 time-on-ice and scoring three points (0G / 3A) in nine games. Seamus Casey draws into the Devils' lineup on Tuesday, filling in for Pesce on the blueline.

Halonen is expected to be a healthy scratch in Colorado on Tuesday.

Juho Lammikko will make his Devils' season debut on Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche, sending Halonen to the press box as a healthy scratch. The 26-year-old has already played a career-high seven games this season but is still in search of his first career NHL point.

Lammikko will make his Devils' debut in Colorado on Tuesday.

After three seasons in Switzerland, Juho Lammikko signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Devils in the offseason. However, a lower-body injured has delayed his return to the NHL. The 28-year-old last appeared in the NHL with Vancouver in the 2021-22 season, where he recorded seven goals and 15 points in 75 games played.
