Another day, another shutout for Jacob Markstrom.

Markstrom is thriving in Darryl Sutter’s tight, defensive system, as he has five shutouts this season through just 13 games played.

On Friday’s edition of The Daily Faceoff Show, Frank Seravalli and Steve Greeley discussed whether Markstrom can break Tony Espositio’s expansion-era record of 15 shutouts in a single season…

Seravalli: “Jacob Markstrom got his fifth shutout in 13 games. Should the Esposito family be on alert? The NHL single-season record of 15 in the expansion era was set in 1969-70. Is Markstrom going to get there? Is he going to get close?

Greeley: “I would say the Esposito family has to take notice. The reason is we know the scoring goes down in the middle of the year, these games get tighter checking. I expect Calgary to continue to play very well defensively and Markstrom to keep pucks out of the net.

Why do I vote for him to do it? Because I want to root for records being broken. Let’s do it. I think the Vancouver fans won’t be thrilled, but it’ll be a good one to watch.

Seravalli: “What I love about the Markstrom run, and I think it should be on alert, because Darryl Sutter’s game has found a way to really clamp down that’s going to give them an opportunity to get close on a lot of nights. But what’s fascinating about five shutouts on 13 nights for Markstrom is how long he went in his career without one.

The first 128 games played for him in the NHL were played without a single shutout. Now it’s five in 13 games. He’s been one of the league’s best goaltenders over the past few years. But, still, some mind-numbing numbers from Markstrom to start.
