The Daily Faceoff Show: Is Claude Giroux a good fit for the Calgary Flames?

Don’t look now, but the Calgary Flames have again caught fire.

Calgary has won on the road – in Dallas and Arizona – on each of the last two nights. It has run the Flames’ winning streak to three games, in the midst of a stretch where Calgary’s won five out of six.

The streak has vaulted the Flames to within .001% in terms of points percentage of the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

Yet when it comes discussing teams that have the potential to make a long playoff run this spring, the Flames are hardly involved in the discussion.

On Thursday’s episode of The Daily Faceoff Show, Mike McKenna cited one player that the Flames could target before the trade deadline that may be able to help change this narrative.

McKenna: “I really like Claude Giroux. A lot of this is going to be driven by Giroux, himself. Chuck Fletcher, the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, has said: ‘hey, Claude’s going to have the opportunity to make the decision of if he wants to move on or not.’

“But I look at the Flames roster and down the middle, I think they can use a little bit of help.

“Backlund and Monahan, they’ve been fighting for second-third line minutes at center and neither have really grasped that role. And I just look at how Giroux can fit into that team. He could play first line if necessary, but I don’t see that happening with the way Lindholm plays.

“I think he really fits the second or third line. A boost on the power play for them.

“And I think he’d fit right into Darryl Sutter. I think once you show up and have the pressure taken off of you of being the captain previously, sometimes that’s a weight off your shoulders. You just walk in and can play your game.”
