Zach Hyman suspended two games for late hit on Bruins’ McAvoy

Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward Zach Hyman will pay the price for a late hit he delivered in the third period of Saturday’s blowout loss to the Boston Bruins.

Hyman has been handed a two-game suspension for interference on Bruins’ blueliner Charlie McAvoy.

According to the NHL Player Safety video ruling, Hyman got multiple games due to the “force of the hit and the predatory nature of the hit itself.” The 26-year-old forfeits $24,193.55 in salary.

McAvoy was playing in his second game back after sitting out 20 contests with a concussion.

Hyman was assessed a five-minute interference penalty on the play.

It was clearly a late hit and was completely unnecessary. McAvoy didn’t have the puck and was looking in the other direction. Hyman was then forced to answer for his actions in a fight against Matthew Grzelcyk.

Hyman has been an important player for Toronto this season, recording seven goals and 15 points in 30 games along with 36 PIM. This is the first time he has been suspended in his 210-game NHL career.
