NHL Hockey Player News

The Capitals have recalled Nicolas Deschamps from Hershey (AHL).

Deschamps, 24, has likely been recalled as insurance for Marcus Johansson, who has had VISA/Passport issues in his return from Sochi, Russia. Deschamps has 13 goals and 16 assists (29 points) in 47 games with Hershey. He has never dressed for an NHL game.

Rinne (hip) barring any setbacks could play on the Preds 5-game homestand.

Predators head coach Barry Trotz said that Rinne has a chance to play on the homestand (Feb 27-Mar 8) in a radio interview on Wednesday morning. Most thought that Rinne was still a few weeks away from game action, but this is great news for the Predators who sit four points out of the final wild card spot in the West. Rinne is owned in 84% of Yahoo! leagues, if you are in a league where he was dropped, he makes for a great pickup as the fantasy playoffs approach.

Pekka Rinne
Ward leads the Hurricanes onto the ice for warmups; he starts as expected.

Ward has not played a game since December 31. He allowed four goals on 25 shots in a 5-4 OT win over the Habs that night. Injuries have held Ward to 18 starts this season, he is 6-7-5 with a 3.14 GAA and .895 SV% on the season. Ward gets a good matchup in his first game back as he gets set to take on the Sabres.

Cam Ward
Anderson (personal) will start on Thursday if he is back with the Senators by then.

Anderson was in Florida today to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. The Senators are fully expecting to have Anderson back for Thursday's meeting with the Red Wings, if he is back he will start. Anderson is 19-12-8 with a 3.09 GAA and .908 SV% so far this season.

Craig Anderson
Roberto Luongo doesn't expect to start Wednesday; thus Lack starts vs. Blues.

Lack stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 2-0 loss to the Red Wings in his last start (Feb. 3). Tuesday was the first time Luongo skated with the team since before leaving for Sochi, so it looks like Lack will get the call. Lack is 2-0-0 with a 1.44 GAA and .945 SV% in two starts vs. St. Louis this season.

Eddie Lack
Sedin (personal) still not back at Canucks practice Tuesday.

There is no word on whether or not Sedin will be available for Wednesday's clash with the Blues. Monitor his status during tomorrow's morning skate. Sedin has missed eight of the last 10 games with a rib/finger injury (also held him out of the Olympics).

Henrik Sedin
Burrows (hand) skated at Canucks' practice on Tuesday.

Burrows suffered a sprained hand in the final game before the Olympic break, but he skated on the top line with Jordan Schroeder and Daniel Sedin at this afternoon's practice, so it looks like he could be in the lineup on Wednesday. Whether or not he is in the lineup or not, Burrows is still goalless while only recording five assists in 28 games this season. There are better fantasy options than this former 35-goal scorer.

Alexandre Burrows
Bieksa (foot) was back at Canucks practice after taking Monday off.

The Canucks get back in action on Wednesday and it is starting to look like Bieksa will be back in the lineup after missing the last five games before the break. Bieksa will be monitored during Wednesday's morning skate and a decision on his availability will be made shortly after.

The Ducks have sent Sami Vatanen to Norfolk (AHL).

Vatanen, who played very well for Finland in Sochi, has been returned to the AHL suggesting that Mark Fistric will be good to go on Friday vs. St. Louis. His return to the AHL is not a knock on his skill level, but he is a victim of a numbers game. If the Ducks are dealt another injury on the blueline, expect Vatanen to be the first one recalled.

Sami Vatanen
Johnson starts Wednesday in Buffalo.

Johnson stopped 26 of 28 shots in a win over the Senators in the Bruins final game before the Olympic break. Johnson has won each of his last five starts since January 16 while posting a 1.83 GAA and .937 SV%, he makes for an excellent spot start on Wednesday vs. the Sabres.

Chad Johnson
Rask will not travel with Bruins to Buffalo, Chad Johnson starts.

Rask started four of six games for Finland at the Olympics and did so while battling the flu. The Bruins will have him stay in Boston to rest and then likely get him back in the crease on Saturday when the B's host the Washington Capitlas. Niklas Svedberg, who was recalled on Monday, will serve as Johnson's backup in Buffalo.

Kearns has cleared waivers and been reassigned to Worcester (AHL).

Kearns has recorded three goals, one assist and six penalty minutes in 22 games this season with San Jose. At the time of his recall (Dec. 28), he led Worcester in points (18) and assists (13) and currently ranks sixth on the team in scoring.

Bracken Kearns
Kane (hand) will be back in the Jets lineup on Thursday.

Kane has missed the last six games with an infected hand, but will play on Thursday. Kane has only played in four of the last 14 games, he recorded one goal and three assists in those four games. Injuries have limited Kane to 42 games this season, but while in the lineup he has recorded 15 goals and 14 assists (29 points) in 42 games.

Evander Kane
Backstrom (undisclosed) did not practice on Tuesday.

WIld head coach Mike Yeo said he hopes that Backstrom will return to practice on Wednesday. Yeo said that Backstrom is dealing with a "mid-body" injury. The Wild play on Thursday and Friday, they are hopeful that Darcy Kuemper and Backstrom will split those starts.

Niklas Backstrom
A decision on Koivu (ankle) will be made after Thursday's morning skate.

Koivu has been sidelined since January 4, but has progressed well towards a possible return on Thursday. Wild head coach Mike Yeo said they will not know whether or not Koivu will play until following Thursday's morning skate.

Mikko Koivu
Franzen (concussion) has been cleared to play, but a decision will be made after Wednesday's morning skate.

Franzen has missed 23 of the last 24 games. Head coach Mike Babcock will evaluate his lineup tomorrow morning and an update on Franzen will be released following the morning skate. Franzen has nine goals and 14 assists (23 points) in 31 games this season.
