Hejda (groin) out tonight for Avs
With Shane O'Brien getting back into the lineup, someone had to sit. The veteran Hejda managed four goals and 12 points over his first 47 games in Colorado.
Meanwhile, center Ryan O'Reilly and his four points in his past four games have led the way for the Avs.
O'Reilly, or Factor as he's been affectionately dubbed, is the team's best offensive player at this point in the season. However, his main value is as a depth center in deeper fantasy hockey leagues.

The Panthers have had steady offense from the blue line of late, as defenseman Jason Garrison has points in consecutive games, including a tally.
Expect Garrison to lead the Panthers blue line tonight with Ed Jovanovski sidelined. His 12 goals in 44 games have been impressive to say the least.

Shaw has really helped the club get over losing Dan Carcillo for the season. If he keeps this up, he may have taken the job over permanently.

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today D Ed Jovanovski will undergo hand surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Ouelette and a full recovery is expected.
Jovo Cop was in a fight with Daniel Paille and hurt his hand then. The veteran defender has two goals and eight points in 43 games. Expect Keaton Ellerby to draw in for him.

Prust moves up to the third line. In addition to his 76 PIM, he also has registered two goals and 10 points. Not a bad option for managers who need penalty minutes.

Callahan ended last night's game on the third line opposed to the second. In his first season as team captain, the Rochester, NY, native has 15 goals and 32 points. He may be able to get Brian Boyle and Ruslan Fedotenko going.

Torts says Wojtek Wolski "on our club" right now because forwards are banged up
The team wants to put Wolski in the minors for a conditioning stint but need an extra forward. Safe to assume he's not in the team's plans as long as they remain healthy.

It could be nothing but D'Agostini is skating with McDonald & Porter on extra forward group. Interesting. #stlblues
Sounds like D'Agostini is the odd-man out with the Blues mostly healthy. He has nine goals and 17 points over 45 games this year.
Jordan Eberle is skating again today.
Eberle continues to skate which is a great sign for the Oilers. Before getting hurt he scored 17 goals and 43 points through 41 games.

Niklas Backstrom will dress. He lost six pounds, and for a guy with not a lot of weight to lose, he's having trouble gaining it back (I generously offered some of mine). He got sick on the flight home from Calgary nine or 10 days ago and couldn't beat the stomach bug.
Backstrom likely needs a couple more days of practice before playing but should get into a game this week. He last played on January 7th.

Wellman moves up from the fourth line. The Brentwood, California native scored two goals and seven points over 13 games.

Notable suspensions and fines include Ryan Reaves of the Toronto Maple Leafs who was given a five-game suspension for an illegal check to the head against the Edmonton Oilers, and Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Jeannot who was dealt a three-game suspension, also for an illegal hit to the head.
In the 2023-24 season, there were a total of 14 suspensions and 17 fines issued throughout the NHL. The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
