The word coming from team sources is that the early prognosis on Staal is that he has a Grade 2/3 MCL tear that would put him out of the lineup for at least 3-6 weeks with no surgery required.

Staal has not played since hurting his knee on Friday night. Tough to expect too much more from him this season as he probably returns with a few weeks left in the season.

The Sabres received another injury scare in the opening period when Thomas Vanek was drilled by a Tyler Myers shot. Vanek slowly glided to the bench, but returned to the ice moments later, only to retreat to the dressing room later in the period. The forward did come back for the 2nd period and played the remainder of the game.

Vanek has played through several injuries this season so it should be no surprise that he stayed in the game. Expect the scoring winger to take a few maintenance days for the bumps and bruises.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
