Victor Hedman to potentially play on the top defensive pairing with Eric Brewer. Speaking of the possibility, Hedman said “I’m up to the challenge. I’ve said before I want to be a difference maker and be a force on the ice. That’s my goal.”

Through his first two NHL seasons, Hedman posted seven goals and 49 points. In his third professional season he should be able to break through offensively. He would be a nice draft-day steal as a late round pick.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins went through a 60+ minute workout this morning as the team departs for Vancouver this afternoon. Among today’s storylines in practice was Sidney Crosby who said afterwards he doesn’t expect to receive clearance for contact on the Penguins upcoming Western Canada swing.

Look for Crosby to return at the absolute earliest during Game 5 against the Washington Capitals.

"He told me he was doubtful after the practice," said head coach Ron Wilson, following an afternoon session at the Mastercard Centre. "We still have [Wednesday] and another day to get ready so I'll remain cautiously optimistic, but have a plan in case he can't go."

Connolly was projected to start the season on the top line but he likely misses a few games. Connolly scored 13 goals and 42 points last season as injuries limited him to 68 games. Tyler Bozak will take his place in the interim as the top line center.

Both players not skating with the team indicates they will miss at least seven days from the time they are placed on IR. Last season he only posted 10 assists through 78 points. While he aids his team defensively, don't expect any offensive production from the former 9th overall pick.

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has signed defenseman Matt MacKenzie to a three-year entry level NHL contract.

The team's third round pick in 2010 scored seven goals and 38 points through 73 games in the WHL, split between the Tri-City Americans and Calgary Hitmen.

Barring injury, Florida will have to make another roster move in the coming weeks when Mike Santorelli (shoulder) is ready to play. Santorelli isn't wearing a sling and has been watching practices the past few days.

Last season Santorelli scored 20 goals and 41 points through 82 games. With improved wingers he was expected to top those totals but could need to earn his place in the lineup following this injury.

Evgeny Dadonov, starting his second full season with the Panthers, may be the odd man out at least early on.

With all the recent signings in Florida, it appears Dadonov is the odd man out. Last season he scored eight goals and 17 points through 36 games at age 21. He should rotate back into the lineup at some point this year.

Wingers Chad LaRose and Patrick Dwyer did miss today's practice. Dwyer was said to be ill and should be back Wednesday

Dwyer is listed as day-to-day and should return to the lineup in time for the season opener. Last season he added nine goals and 18 points on the third line. He probably starts the year on the fourth line.

Maurice said LaRose would skate Wednesday, and that personnel decisions would be made tomorrow. LaRose could be placed on Injured Reserve, Maurice said.

If LaRose is not healthy enough to play in the season opener, look for the team to recall Drayson Bowman or Zach Boychuk. Last season LaRose scored 16 goals and 31 points in a checking line with Brandon Sutter. Jiri Tlusty probably replaces him on the third line if he can't suit up.

The Carolina Hurricanes find themselves in a perplexing situation regarding their rookie defenseman Ryan Murphy. They can keep him for the season, they can keep him for a nine game "preview" and then return him to the juniors, or they can return him to his junior team before the season starts, (and anytime up to the nine games).

Murphy probably is beaten out of a spot by Justin Faulk. Last season he scored 26 goals and 79 points through 63 games with the Kitchener Rangers of the AHL. Expect him to make an NHL impact as soon as next season.
