Niederreiter sounds confident in his ability to make the team but will need to knock an established NHL player out of the way to do so. In his nine-game stint last season, the rookie posted a goal and an assist.

Although head coach Pete DeBoer said Sunday that Martin Brodeur was going to play in the scrimmage, he is not out there. A Devils spokesperson said GM Lou Lamoriello said both have “lower-body” issues, “nothing serious.”

Brodeur is coming off an injury-plagued season where he only started 56 games. The Hall of Fame netminder will likely continue to be coddled during the preseason.

After a remarkable junior career with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, Ponich will get an opportunity to prove himself at a higher level when he joins the Blues' American Hockey League affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen, after training camp.

Ponich will start the season in Peoria but could earn a callup if the Blues face substantial injuries.

Center Patrik Berglund has been dominating many of the training camp drills because of his size (6-4, 215 pounds), and Payne called it "a pretty good starting point for him.

Berglund scored 22 goals and 52 points last season -- both career highs. The second line center could be poised for a breakout season alongside Chris Stewart and TJ Oshie.

Colton Gillies picked up right where he left off in the Houston Aeros and is showing he's taking nothing for granted with his one-way deal. He was fast, assertive, physical on the forecheck and looked very good on a line with Eric Nystrom and Brad Staubitz.

The former 16th overall pick continues to work hard in training camp as he tries to earn one of the available fourth line spots. The 6'4" left wing still lacks any offensive pedigree as he registered only 11 goals with the Houston Aeros of the AHL last season.

Hendry said his knee is 100 percent. "I'm welcoming the challenge," he added. "I think there's maybe some opportunity here on the back end. I want to make the staff make a hard decision on me."

Hendry could make the team out of training camp but would be used as a spare defenseman. The former Stanley Cup Champion posted four goals and 13 points over his 129-game NHL career.

Bouchard looked like the Bouchard of old, skating elusively through traffic, stickhandling by defenders and setting up play after play. Best yet, he showed immediate chemistry with potential linemates Guillaume Latendresse and Matt Cullen.

Bouchard sounds fine to draft and should be a useful fantasy hockey player. The versatile forward scored 12 goals and 38 points last season in only 59 games.

Omark proved last year he can play in this league. He’s small but tough-minded. He took some hellacious hits along the boards, got up, and kept playing. He’s deceptively hard to knock off the puck, with a big rear end and strong legs.

Omark may struggle to make the team out of training camp but he is certainly NHL ready. Through 51 games last season, the dangling forward scored five goals and 27 points with a minus-16 rating.

This fall, Brouwer could challenge Alexander Semin and Mike Knuble for quality minutes at right wing

The former 40-goal scorer only managed 28 goals in 65 games last season. If he has his playing time decreased, he could struggle to top 30 goals over a full season. In addition, Semin has never played over 77 games in a regular season campaign.

They've also pushed Green into a bit of a reduced role. In addition to taking the 25-to-30-minute games away from Green, the young duo has pushed the Young Gun into a spot as the unofficial No. 3 defenseman.

Green will be put to the ultimate test this season as he attempts to earn playing time that was once his. Coming off a season where he only suited up for 49 games, the 25-year-old could easily pot 15+ goals if put in the right situations.

As a fan favorite in Manitoba, Jaffray could make the team out of sentimental value. Through 36 career NHL games, the 29-year-old holds four goals and 10 points to his name.

Add defenseman Roman Josi to Nashville’s list of walking-wounded. Josi sat out practice Sunday with what Trotz called an upper-body injury. He was not on Nashville’s roster for today’s exhibition games against Florida.

Josi was expected to challenge for a roster spot this preseason but could start the year in the AHL to start. Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm certainly have a leg-up on him as long as he remains on the shelf.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
