On Saturday, the Winnipeg Jets defenceman was back on the ice with his teammates for a 45-minute session and made it perfectly clear that he was close to 100% and merely resting a minor ailment the past few days.

Byfgulien isn't expected to miss the season opener against the Canadiens which is a good sign for Byfuglien or any Jets owner for that matter. Last season, he broke career highs in goals, assists and points while adding a gaudy 347 shots on goal. He should be expected to reach those totals, or more, if he plays forward.

“Taylor had surgery late Friday night and he’ll be staying in the hospital for a bit in Minneapolis to recover and make sure everything goes well,” said Oilers head coach Tom Renney. “I think he’s doing fine, but as you can imagine it’s pretty traumatic.”

Fedun shattered his femur -- the largest bone in the leg, which generally stabilizes. His career could be in jeopardy at this point in time.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Saturday that forward B.J. Crombeen suffered a left shoulder scapula fracture.

Crombeen is out indefinitely from the injury. Last season he scored seven goals and 14 points while adding 154 PIM. Expect a youngster like Ryan Reaves, Evgeni Grachev or Chris Porter to get looks in his absence.

The Ducks announced on Saturday that defenseman Matt Smaby will be out two to three months because of a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Smaby had a chance to make the team out of training camp but likely gives his role over to Nate Guenin. Last season the Minneapolis, Minnesota native was held pointless in his 32 games with the Lightning. His zero goals over 122 NHL games indicates he holds no fantasy hockey value.

Staal is practicing today in Hartford. He’ll go through a workout again today and we’ll see how he feels in the next day or so after the workout. It’s day to day as far as the information he gives up. There’s not much as far as an update. He is practicing. It’s his second day practicing. It’s encouraging that he’s on the ice.

The Rangers remain hopeful Staal will join them in Europe. Last season, he scored seven goals and 29 points -- the latter as a career high. Expect similar production when factoring in games missed, but don't expect any sort of offensive outburst.

Sauer skated yesterday, he moved the puck yesterday. He’s still sore. We think with another day off…he will not play in tomorrow’s game (in Slovakia). It’s day to day with him. We think he’s getting better. We want to get him completely better before we put him in.

Sauer looked healthy earlier in the preseason but with is injury history the Rangers will play it safe. Last season he scored three goals and 15 points over 76 games with the team. He won't help out your fantasy hockey team as much as help the Rangers keep the puck out of the net.

Payne says Colaiacovo has a chest injury and is day to day. Could practice tomorrow.

Definitely a good sign for the often-injured Colaiacovo. Last season he scored six goals and 26 points but sits behind Kevin Shattenkirk and Alex Pietrangelo on the depth chart. Expect Kent Huskins and Mark Cundari to take over for him in the meantime.

Winger Ryan Russell remains on the roster, but that's mostly a formality. Russell, nursing a bruised foot after blocking a shot last week, could be healthy before the roster has to be set on Wednesday. If he is, he'll go on waivers with the purpose of joining Springfield. If he isn't healthy, he'll go on IR.

Russell, the brother of defenseman Kris, will not make the team but could land on IR if his injury is long term.

Ben Smith is the “same” according to Quenneville as he recovers from the blow to his head he took in Wednesday’s game against Detroit.

Smith's injury somewhat frees up the logjam at forward. The winger scored a goal in six regular season games before becoming a postseason hero for the Blackhawks. Keep an eye on this situation and don't roster Smith until he proves himself healthy.

Dave Bolland sat out another day of practice Friday morning but Quenneville said his upper body injury wasn’t serious.

Bolland isn't expected to miss too much time which is good for a lineup already missing Smith, Stalberg and Sharp. Last season he scored 15 goals and 37 points while centering the second and third line but missed 21 games due to various injuries. If he can't play the Blackhawks will have a hard time replacing his two-way play.

After the game, when asked about Dustin Penner’s status, and why he missed the game, Terry Murray paused, then said that he made the decision to scratch Penner in order to get another look at Dwight King. Before the game, a team spokesman said Penner “had an injury,” and that Murray would give an update after the game.

Penner skated with Mike Richards and Dustin Brown during practice today, indicating he is OK. Last season the power forward scored 23 goals and 45 points in a down season. With a full year in Los Angeles, he could return to the 60-point range.

Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo (knee) are not skating, but Bortuzzo could skate soon.

Following two seasons in the AHL, Bortuzzo was expected to compete for a roster spot. Last season, the former third rounder scored four goals and 26 points over 79 games with the Wikes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. He could see playing time later in the season should the blue line sustain injuries.

The Edmonton native, who was making a big push for a roster spot after graduating with a mechanical engineering degree from Princeton University, was taken from the ice on a stretcher 90 seconds into the middle period with a broken right femur.

Fedun was in line for a roster spot but will now be out for the longterm. The Princeton University graduate has yet to play an officially professional game.

DeBoer said that defenseman Bryce Salvador is being held out of tonight’s game for “precautionary” reasons. Salvador has had some soreness in his hips and groins.

If today was a regular season game, or playoff game for that matter, Salvador would probably be in the lineup. In 2009-2010, the Brandon, Manitoba native scored four goals and 14 points for the Devils. He likely helps Martin Brodeur and company a whole lot more than he will your fantasy hockey team.

Abdelakder was not injured and there was no penalty for the hit. Abdelkader got up and started throwing punches at MacArthur.

Following a hit to the head, Abdelkader likely won't miss any playing time. Last year he scored seven goals and 19 points, both career highs. Expect him to start the season on the third line in the latest reiteration of two kids and a goat.

Blue Jackets winger Jared Boll suffered a broken right thumb during a second-period fight tonight in Raleigh, N.C., an injury that could sideline him for two months.

The right wing will need to be replaced on the fourth line. Last season he scored a career-high seven goals with 182 PIM. He wouldn't be a bad source of PIM, if healthy.

Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash did not travel with the club to Raleigh, N.C., for tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes because of a "very minor" injury that the club did not want to risk worsening. If this was a regular-season game, The Dispatch was told, he would definitely be playing.

After suffering various short-term injuries over the past two seasons, Nash will attempt staying healthy as long as possible. Last season the team's captain scored 32 goals and 66 points for the Blue Jackets. He is expected to return to the 80-point range with an improved offense.

In the NHL, players are often moved in and out of the lineup due to injury but when an issue occurs in which a player is set to miss an extended period of time, they must be placed under the official designation of the injured reserve list. NHL teams utilize reserve lists as a way to provide injured players time to recover from their physical ailments, as well as to free up space within their active roster to replace the output of their missing player.

There are two versions of reserve lists in the NHL, the injured reserve list (IR) and the long term injured reserve list (LTIR). Each reserve list holds their own distinctions for players to qualify, as well as how teams are able to replace members of the roster when they are forced to send an injured athlete to an injury reserve list. The LTIR pool is the amount in which a team is granted in cap space after a player has been assigned to the LTIR. This amount is determined by subtracting the total amount of cap space remaining for a team from the affected player’s salary cap hit for the season. The amount given in the LTIR pool is also dependent on whether a team is under or over the salary cap at the beginning of the regular season.

For example, if a player who has a $2 million annual cap hit is placed on the LTIR and their team was under the salary cap by $500K, they would deduct the $500K in remaining cap space from the player’s annual salary hit, leaving the team with $1.5M to spend on replacements for their injured player.

However, if a team is over the salary cap to begin the regular season the LTIR pool is divided differently. In this case whatever the value of the overage in salary cap is at the start of the season will be the LTIR pool funds available for a club. For example, if a team is over the salary cap by $1 million, and a player with a $5 million cap hit is placed on the LTIR, their LTIR pool is valued at $1M as that is the amount they were over the cap to begin the season.

When a player is removed from the LTIR, the team must be under the annual salary cap hit on that day.
