30 NHL players placed on waivers for Sept. 24

As the preseason continues, more players are being cut across the NHL.

On Thursday, 30 players were placed on waivers, making them available to the other 31 teams in the league.

If they were to clear waivers on Thursday, they would be eligible to be assigned to their respective American Hockey League affiliates.

Of the day’s list of players, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz is a name that is going to garner interest from other teams. The 30-year-old has been a main part of the Leafs’ bottom six since joining the team in 2024. His production is limited, only scoring 15 goals and 37 points over his two seasons in Toronto, but he can be a useful asset for a team seeking a little more depth and grit in their forward group. Lorentz is on a team-friendly contract, as he heads into the second season of his three-year deal, which has a cap hit of $1.35 million.

A couple of goaltenders were put on waivers as well. The ever-popular Leevi Merilainen looks to be rejoining the AHL’s Belleville Senators after another tough showing with the Ottawa Senators during training camp. Also, NCAA champion Matthew Murray (the other one) was placed on the wire by the Nashville Predators and is expected to return to the Milwaukee Admirals.

The Leafs and Minnesota Wild led the charge on Thursday with eight players hitting the wire. Minnesota is expecting players like Tyler Pitlick and Carson Lambos to be joining their primary affiliate, the Iowa Wild.

An astounding 34 players were placed on waivers on Wednesday, including Lightning goaltender Jonas Johansson and Leafs defenseman Dakota Mermis. All of them cleared and can make their way to the AHL.
