Red Wings, Predators claim NHL players on waivers for Sept 26
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, two NHL clubs claimed players off the waiver wire on Saturday afternoon.
The Detroit Red Wings have claimed defenseman Andreas Englund off waivers from the Calgary Flames. Additionally, the Nashville Predators have claimed defenseman William Trudeau off waivers from the New York Rangers.
Friedman also confirmed that the other 59 players placed on waivers Friday all went unclaimed. That includes Utah Mammoth forward Brandon Tanev, who still has two seasons remaining on the three-year deal he signed with the club as a UFA in 2025.
Englund, 30, signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Flames on July 1. The 6’4″ left-shot defender appeared in one preseason game with the Flames before being waived on Friday; he’s now a member of the Red Wings, who might need a little extra help on the blue line if they can’t agree to terms with RFA defender Simon Edvinsson.
A veteran of 200 games with the Ottawa Senators, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, and Predators, Englund has collected two goals, 20 points, and 190 penalty minutes across parts of eight NHL seasons. He’s added one assist in five career playoff games, all with the Kings in 2024.
Trudeau, 23, is a 5’11” left-shot defender who has not appeared in a single NHL game in his career to date. A fourth-round pick (No. 113 overall) of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021 NHL Draft, Trudeau spent the past four seasons with the AHL’s Laval Rocket before being traded to the Rangers in June.
The Rangers signed Trudeau to a one-year, two-way contract on July 6. Now, he’ll get the chance to play a depth role in Nashville, where he’ll likely vie for ice time against the likes of Justin Barron, Adam Wilsby, and Ryan Ufko.
