One of the top young players in the PWHL last season has officially extended her stay in New England.

On Wednesday, the Boston Fleet announced that the team has re-signed forward Abby Newhook to a two-year contract, which will carry through the 2027-28 season.

Newhook was a pending restricted free agent heading into the offseason, but was able to be protected by the Fleet during Phase 3 of the PWHL Expansion Player Distribution Process after extending the 23-year-old a qualifying offer.

Newhook’s deal is a reward after an exceptional maiden voyage in the league. Taken by Boston in the fifth round, 34th overall, of the 2025 PWHL Draft, it wasn’t a sure thing that the Boston College product was even going to make the main roster out of training camp. However, her speed and tenacity impressed the team’s brass, earning her a one-year contract prior to the regular season. Her contract carried a low salary of $40,000.

The St. John’s, N.L. native ended up being one of the Fleet’s top offensive weapons. In 29 regular-season affairs, she scored seven goals and 14 points, finishing sixth on the team in scoring. Newhook led Boston with a plus/minus of +17 while averaging 13:47 of ice time per game. Her play helped the team finish second in the PWHL, but the Fleet were ultimately eliminated in the semifinals by the Ottawa Charge. Newhook posted one assist in the four-game series.

Newhook earned postseason accolades for her play. In finishing fifth in scoring from first-year players, she, along with teammate and Rookie of the Year Haley Winn, was named to the All-Rookie Team.

With the signing, the Fleet have 17 players inked to contracts for the 2026-27 season. They are allowed to sign two more players prior to training camp.
