Why Sabres’ Alex Lyon could be a good fit for the Oilers

Edmonton Oilers’ fans held their breath Thursday night as goaltender Tristan Jarry left during the second period of their game against the Boston Bruins with a lower-body injury.

On Friday, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reported that Jarry would leave the team and fly back to Edmonton to be re-evaluated, likely keeping him out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Wild.
The news comes after Jarry, acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins last week that sent Stuart Skinner the other way, has played in just three games with his new team.
One option for the Oilers could be Buffalo Sabres’ netminder Alex Lyon, who currently has a 7-6-3 record with a .904 save percentage (SV%) and 2.99 goals against average (GAA) in 18 appearances this season. For Oilers’ GM Stan Bowman, if Jarry is out with a long-term injury, Edmonton may not have a choice when it comes to acquiring a replacement in the crease.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss Jarry’s injury and if Lyon would be a good fit for an Oilers’ group trying to stay afloat.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Edmonton has back-to-back games this weekend. Can you get someone up from their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield? Sure, but they play four times before the holiday roster freeze.
There’s a lot of smoke around the Sabres right now and goaltender Alex Lyon. They’re doing the three-goalie system, and new GM Jarmo Kekalainen in his introductory press conference talked about how he wants to put an end to that three-goalie situation.
Do you think Lyon is potentially a fit for the Oilers? Would they be smart trying to make this happen before the roster freeze?
Carter Hutton: I think so. I don’t think there’s ever a time that’s too early to do a trade. I guess maybe desperation is on their side and the value of Lyon goes up a bit. But I think this is something that needs to be addressed.
If Buffalo is serious about getting where they need to go, they have younger pieces that will be their guy. They have Colton Ellis and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and tell them they’re competing for the starting role.
For Alex Lyon, he’s been in this situation and he’s bounced around. Three years ago, he came in and singlehandedly got the Florida Panthers to the playoffs.
