The rough start to the season continues for a veteran blueliner.

On Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

Gostisbehere’s placement on IR is retroactive to Oct. 28, when he suffered the injury against the Vegas Golden Knights. It was the 32-year-old’s first game back since having another ailment on Oct. 18 in a game against the Los Angeles Kings that landed him on IR as well.

Per the NHL’s IR rules, Gostisbehere can return to the lineup whenever he’s ready to go. He has appeared in just five games, but he has certainly made an impact thus far, potting a goal and six assists for seven points. The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native has a plus/minus of +8 so far, while averaging 14:34 of ice time per game.

Gostisbehere also had a back injury that led to him missing three games late in the 2024-25 regular season. However, he returned in time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, helping Carolina reach the Eastern Conference Final, where they were inevitably upended by the eventual champion Florida Panthers. Gostisbehere scored three goals and six assists for nine points in 15 games.

Gostisbehere is in the second season of a three-year contract that he signed with the Hurricanes in July 2024, marking his second stint with the team. The deal has a cap hit of $3.2 million through next season, which has a modified no-trade clause where the player must submit a 15-team no-trade list.

In 11-plus seasons in the NHL, parts of three spent in Raleigh, Gostisbehere has played in 695 games, scoring 105 goals and 314 assists for 419 points. He’s also notched 17 points in 47 postseason contests.

The Hurricanes (9-4-0) are slated to host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
