Blue Jackets acquire Mason Marchment from Kraken for picks

The Columbus Blue Jackets bolstered their roster on Friday night, acquiring veteran left winger Mason Marchment in a trade with the Seattle Kraken in exchange for the New York Rangers‘ fourth round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and the Blue Jackets’ own 2027 second round pick in 2027, according to Frank Seravalli.
The transaction went through in the final hours before the NHL trade freeze, which went into effect at 12:00 am ET on Dec. 21 and runs through Dec. 27.
Marchment had been the subject of trade rumors throughout the week as the Kraken continued to struggle on the ice, dropping to seventh in the Pacific Division standings and falling further out of the Western Conference Wild Card Picture. With Marchement, they had an asset to recoup some benefits in what looks to be a lost season.
The 30-year-old forward has four goals and nine assists for 13 games this season and has previously shown an ability to be a physical presence in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as he did through his time with the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars.
Joining the Blue Jackets, Marchment arrives on another struggling team, but one that has slightly more hope of breaking into the Eastern Conference Wild Card Race. At the time of the trade, Columbus sat at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, but six points off the Philadelphia Flyers for the final Wild Card berth.
Now they add Marchment, who will be the fifth team he plays for in his NHL career. An undrafted signing into the NHL, Marchment has played 331 regular-season games, scoring 80 goals and 122 assists for 202 points, since making his debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019-20.
According to PuckPedia, the Uxbridge, Ontario, native carries an AAV of $4,500,000 for this season, with the deal he initially signed with the Stars in 2022 set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
The Blue Jackets will play the Kraken once more in 2025-26, facing off on March 21 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
